KTRU to KUHC

By the way, Dhruv, the original petition against the sale numbered 2500+ signatures and the current, official one, already has over 500. Since no one at Rice apparently listens to KTRU it is obvious that a significant number of alumni and the Houston community are miffed by it. Not eye-popping numbers but if alumni donor gifts comprise nearly 10% of the budget, then we may see a lot more than an unpopular radio station go off the air in the next few years.

Once again - this is not a justification for anything. If anything at all, we need to stem this hole in the pocket as well.

The banner switch was done is a fairly open and clear way. The administration made it clear WHY they wanted to make said change.

The result was a Thresher article crying foul, loud protests based on absolutely no fact and “stealing our money” claims popping up all over campus.

Dont fool yourself. The end result would have been the same. This process was just expedited this way.

In any case - this is not the forum to be arguing this. It reflects poorly on Rice regardless which side we are on.

I think you will find that the BANNER decision is much more polarizing in that people either agree with it or don’t. In this case we’ve got two issues at hand–the selling of a cultural equity (the value of which is completely dependent on personal bias) and the process followed to perform that sale (which is less personal and more objective an issue).

I could argue about the rest of your post but I’ll respect this. It is important for prospective students to realize, however, that Rice may not be the same as it was when their parents studied here. It has changed–a lot for the better but a lot for the worse as well. I’m sure most Rice-bound students are intelligent enough to form their own opinions.

Agreed. Rice is an interesting place. We have a myriad of opinions and positions on subjects. I like it because you always find someone who agrees with you, someone who agrees with you core idea but not your implementation and someone who flat out disagrees with you. Makes for interesting debate.

Cheers!
