I'm in Saybrook and I heard that its freshman housing in L-dub is the worse on campus. :(

How bad is it really? Are the rooms just small (I don't really mind that), or is it dirty and old or something?

i'm curious about that too... i'm on the pierson side though.

virtuouso:
First, congrats on getting into the best college at Yale. I'm SY '10 and can guarantee that you'll love Saybrook. As for L-dub, it's true that it sucks compared to the rest of Old Campus housing (but, on the bright side, it's far better than freshman housing at pretty much any other university). Rooms in L-dub are smaller than those in other buildings - the common rooms are decent-sized, but the bedrooms are tiny. Basically, you end up spending very little time in your bedroom - all you use it for is sleep (and possibly to do homework if your desk is in your bedroom). Having a common room means that the size of the bedroom is much less important than it would be otherwise. As far as other negative factors go, there is a bit of a cockroach infestation (it's not too bad though, I saw about 10 all year), and sometimes, for inexplicable reasons, it will start to smell (though most of the time it will be fine). There is a major upside to L-dub, however. It's the most social dorm on Old Campus, meaning that people from other colleges hang out there a lot, and there's always stuff going on. And, in the long run, it's not that bad. I'm glad to be moving into Saybrook next year, but I was perfectly happy in L-dub.

Oh my god COCKROACHES.

I may not survive. No, seriously. Are they.. in the bedrooms? Ahh I wish no one had told me that.

Most of the roaches I've seen were already dead when I saw them, but yes, there were occasionally cockroaches in my bedroom.

I don't want to start a new housing thread, so do freshman in Silliman and TD feel isolated from their Old Campus classmates? Is it much harder to meet frosh from other colleges?

How Do You Know Where You Will Be Living. Thought That Info Was Not Yet Released

jegan3: My thoughts exactly when I read about the cockroaches! :( Wish it remained unsaid. Lol.

svalbard: thanks for the insight.

it's a college dorm - there will be roaches if you don't keep the place clean. Doesn't matter if you're in a princess suite or in L-Dub... Don't worry. Be tidy and you won't see roaches.

Jules, I can guarantee that there are far more roaches in L-dub than in Welch, regardless of how clean you as an individual keep your room. L-dub is simply a dirtier building.

Are there really cockroaches at Yale? How far north do they live? We don't have any where I'm from (too cold, I'd guess). So I've never really seen one, except those hissing ones at the state fair...

I don't think I want to live with cockroaches.

^Ummm... nvm. Apparently my mom's work has cockroaches. I'm just uninformed.

Yale should really spend some money to clean up L-dub or something. I'm a bit worried. :(

virtuoso: agreed, Yale should renovate L-dub (and probably will, once it finishes renovating the residential colleges). But, there's no reason to be worried. For all its flaws, L-dub's residents (both Pierson and Saybrook) love their time in it. In fact, perhaps renovating it would cause it to lose its charm :). Anyway, don't worry, and look forward to an awesome year in L-dub.

I noticed that no one answered Arwen's question about whether Freshman in Silliman and Timothy Dwight feel isolated. Now that my S has been assigned to TD, I'd like to know that too.

I stayed in LDub for Bulldog Days and while I'll be spending freshman year in Farnam, I enjoyed my stay a lot! If Farnam is better than that, well, damn, I'm excited.

I'm at Yale for a summer program, and I'm staying at TD. It is a little isolated from old campus, but things might be a little different during the school year. Old Campus is about a five minute walk, so I can only imagine it interferes a little. TD is really small, but it seems relatively nice. Nonetheless, if I get accepted to Yale I will hopefully get assigned to one of the larger colleges.

As far as cockroaches, I was appalled to see a HUGE one (of the winged variety) on the steps to a classroom building this morning. I absolutely loathe cockroaches, and I was suprised to see them so far north. But yes, they are here.

Quit worry about the cockroaches. They are the state bird here in Texas (cuz they fly, ya know?). Big one in a drawer today. Cockroaches AND cold weather! That will REALLY build character!

Sillimanders and TDers love their locations. In fact, Silliman is often considered a center of social life for upperclassmen; Sillimanders and TDers definitely get to know more upperclassmen as freshmen.

I love Silliman... TD is nice, too, but a little too small in my opinion.
