My kid is down to these two in Philadelphia. Psych (B.A.) major with plans for graduate degree(s) toward clinical psychology. With financial aid, R/B/T will be $29,000/yr. at Saint Joseph's and $18,000 at La Salle. The $11,000 per year difference is not insignificant to our family, especially as we have two more kids to put through over the next 13 years and the economy has been felt. As a point of reference, La Salle comes in at about the same cost as state school with limited FA.

Thoughts?

The Psychology bachelor, masters, and doctorate programs at La Salle University are some of the best in the region, and the fact that you can complete all 3 degrees at one institution is also a plus. St. Joseph’s is a very good school as well, and both schools are within a couple miles of downtown Philadelphia in urban/suburban environments. La Salle University does boast a nice 133 acre gated campus. If you haven’t visited the schools, I would recommend doing that first, and hopefully La Salle will be the right fit.

Thanks for the reply. Is La Salle’s B.A. Psych curriculum research-based or counseling-based? We’re looking for a solid program geared toward clinical psychology. What is the basis for the statement that the Psych programs at La Salle are some of the best in the region?

We have visited and toured both schools and really like both. La Salle’s campus has come a long way since I last saw it 30 years ago. We’ll be going to one of the upcoming Accepted Student days.

We appreciate the information.

PhD programs in Clinical Psychology can differ in their research v. counseling orientation but that doesn’t apply to undergraduate programs in psychology. You are learning pretty basic stuff as an undergraduate.

Like Bonanza said, the undergraduate major would cover both areas of psychology in order to prepare the students for their graduate degrees in clinical psychology. According to US News, La Salle’s Clinical Psychology Doctorate program is one of only several nationally accredited programs in the Philadelphia area along with UPenn and Temple University.

I don’t know about the psychology programs specifically, but in Philadelphia I would say that La Salle and St. Joe’s have fairly equal reputations, so I would go for the cheaper one.

I wasn’t sure if you meant that a state school(Temple?) was also an option- since usually large state schools have good research programs- or were you just comparing prices generally?

La Salle has a better psychology program
