Lab Jobs Qualifications

I'm a incoming first year, so all my lab experience is from high school. Should I even bother trying to apply, or try to get my work study from something else.

Also, how do I find my job ID?

You don’t have a job ID until you get your first UCSD job

And don’t bother. At the very earliest, apply to jobs once you have your first lab techniques course done (should be CHEM6BL or whatever the new name/number it is this year).

Do well in the course and perhaps fetch a reference from your professor or TAs.

yea, unless ur like a super genius in science or have done some unique science related stuff in high school, dont bother to apply it. Usually there are around 100 applicants and professor pick 5 of them to give interviews and eventually pick the one to be his/her assistant

on the other hand, lab RESEARCH is much easier to obtain. it’s mostly being able to show that you can be reliable and commit to 15-20h per week. most labs will expect you to help out with basic lab chores to earn your keep.

Sorry but I have a question, where can we find lab research opportunities?

pick a bunch of professors and start emailing. honestly. or you can ask your TAs - if they’ve been in their programs for a while, they’ll know enough professor gossip to give you leads on who’s popular, a good teacher, a slave driver, etc. that said, if you’re interested in chem labs I can give a few pointers.

regardless of what you pick, you need to be honest in what you want, why you want it, and how much effort you’re willing to put in. if you’re going to count on these people for letters of rec in the future (and you will), it’s best to start off on a good note. and word gets around quickly among grad students, across lab and departments, so don’t do anything you might regret.
