How do I start researching?

I need some help. People I've asked told me they don't know. Anyone here with experience? I'm a Chemistry major, and I'd like to start researching for experience. Should I take a CHEM 99 or CHEM 199 class or something? What would you suggest? Thanks!

What year are you?

A lot of my friends have found lab research jobs (although they are usually not paid) through Port Triton. Good luck!

99/199 are for people who already have a research topic picked out. I am going out on a limb here and saying you don’t already have a topic in mind.
Hence for you I’d reccomend going to chemistry.ucsd.edu -> Faculty and Research tab and start reading the various faculty’s research interests. Make a list of faculty you’d like to work for, then email them saying you’d like to volunteer in their lab etc etc…

P.S. Cast a wide net. Don’t choose one lab and be hell bent on getting in because you will fail. Contact as many faculty as you can. Oh and be prepared to face a lot of rejection, but don’t take it personally either…

Everybody I know who does 99/199 just emails the professor and asks for a research position. That’s it. You can look up on the websites and see which specific research interests you the most and email the professor. You don’t generally need to do much in advance other than show a genuine interest. Some labs require an interview or class prerequisites but in the end, professors are just looking for free workers.
