Does anyone have a feel how athletics at smaller LAC's such as Amherst, Bowdoin, Middlebury, Williams compares to schools such as HYP and other Ivies in terms of time commitment? I have a friend at an Ivy with a coach that was scheduling 2/day practices right up to midterms. I know it waill vary by sport but in general. Thx.

It really depends on the sport and how competitive that school is in a particular sport. My son will be playing lacrosse at a very competitive D3 LAC, and is well aware that he will have daily workouts and team meetings during the off season and workouts and full practices in season. Like I said it varies by sport, the schools you mentioned are competitive so I would think you can expect a similar schedule. I think the Ivy’s would require a more rigorous program schedule and commitment.

^^^^ I agree. Depending on the competitive level of the LAC you would be playing for, that would affect the level of the time commitment expected by the players. However, as a DIII program, I don’t believe that your amount of practice time would be as intense as and Ivy or other D1 program. I think that is meant to be one of the differences, or time benefits, of DIII over D1.

D2 is an athlete at one of the LACs you mentioned. I believe practices vary by sport. For D2, during the season, it was intense workouts daily as well as serious team bonding. Meals were eaten together; there were films to watch together; there were lots of team parties.

The first part of off season was subdued. No formal workouts, no formal weight sessions. Since the beginning of March, still off season, weight workouts have begun in force. Captains practices are called 2-3 times per week.

During summer, the weight trainer institutes a summer workout with weekly checkins. It is the athletes responsibility to complete the workouts.
