the harvey mudd chemistry deptartment boasts sending 80% of its students onto PhD's.

correction: in post #3, it is the number of "physical sciences" graduates, not the number of chemistry graduates. Physical sciences includes physics, chemistry, geology.

surprisingly, connecticut college has a small, but fantastic chem department. recent alumni are currently in chem phd programs at the following schools: yale, duke, northwestern, boston college, berkeley, UNC-CH, UC-SD, UPenn, Arizona, and WPI. (as well as several med schools). not too shabby.

Depending on how much you dislike politics, you may want to rethink CMC. You'll have GE requirements of econ and civics, to name a couple, and a very political campus climate, very politics-oriented speakers/events, etc. As a not-very-big-on-politics student myself, I was drawn to the Consortium but turned off by [what I viewed as] uninteresting GEs at CMC. Of course, you'll also have plenty of access to the other Claremont schools, so this is definitely not intended as a piece of black-and-white advice.

If you're interested in Claremont and you consider CMC/Pomona double reaches, you may want to look into Pitzer or Scripps (if female).
