Anybody know why UR has so few ratings on Rate My Professor compared to other schools? The majority of the ones listed are dated back to 2005... which makes me wonder if there is some other source UR students use to discuss courses and profs - maybe an internal one?

On the same topic... are there any 'must take before graduating UR' courses / profs anybody would like to recommend? As free as the UR course requirements are, I am having a hard time making decisions for next Fall.

While some schools have their own internal rating board/site for profs (I know Drexel does), UR does not.

I don’t know why UR students don’t use RMP. Maybe because the school is pretty small and word of mouth works?

^^I think that is absolutely true. The Rochester community is small enough that friends and fellow classmates will willingly give you the inside scoop.

While I have limited experience taking classes at Rochester, there are two classes that I have heard mentioned as ‘must take before graduating’…

‘Speaking Stones’, which is a course that explores the history of Mt. Hope Cemetary (the cemetary is next to the campus and is where Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony are buried, among others). The second course is the ‘History of Jazz’ with Dean Paul Burgett, one of the most respected and beloved professors/administrators on campus.

We DO HAVE our own internal prof/course rating system. At the end of every semester, students are bombarded with emails urging them to evaluate courses that they have taken. It is through the Academic Services office and the website is here:

https://shib.its.rochester.edu/shibboleth/HS?shire=http%3A%2F%2Frochester.onlinecourseevaluations.com%2FShibboleth.sso%2FSAML%2FPOST&time=1276534655&target=cookie&providerId=Rochester_OnlineCourseEvaluations

You do however need a netID and password to access it. If you log into the site, pretty much all the teachers and courses have a rating and right now it’s as recent as Spring 2010.

Thanks, Zobasity. This should prove useful to current students - having taken a few courses myself, I am enjoying my time perusing this information.

That clears up A LOT! Thank you very much Zobasity!

No problem MConklin & mdtransfer.
Now MConklin, if only I can get that Meridian job I have been applying for so long…

I don’t know if this is on point but the Rochester Review has a list of 101 things to do before you graduate and it included taking a class with Douglas Brooks in religion and classical studies.

Zobasity… what year are you? I used to work with the Meridians, but I am now in the process of organizing a student volunteer group in the admissions office. Though the group has progressed a more slowly than I anticipated (we are still learning what works and what doesn’t), there is a lot of potential to do some fun and meaningful stuff. If you are interested in hearing about it let me know and I’ll send you some info in a PM.

There is an internal page in UR for numerical ratings for professors for past courses, but you can’t see any comments (even though the same pages where you enter the numbers you also enter comments). As far as RMP, I entered a couple comments there my freshman year, then after that I already knew all the professors anyway and never spent the time to review all my professors on there.

Just want to confirm the post above. My daughter has taken both History of Jazz and another course, not sure of the exact title, but something like Music of Black America with Dean Burgett, and they were her absolute favorite courses at Rochester, and she is a science major. She loves Dean Burgett, and loved both of his courses.

Nice to hear that about Dean Burgett. D2 (a double science major) said that her only “free” class (not required for her majors or clusters) will likely be the History of Jazz. (She’s played jazz alto and tenor sax since 6th grade.)

I am very disappointed that they do not allow comments in the internal rating system - the very very few categories that they do list are quite limiting as well. I hope that in the future more UR students will put in the extra effort and use RMP, as it is a great source of information for anyone who knows how to skim through it.

If you’re taking calculus and get the opportunity to take Professor Jon Pakianathan’s class, do it! He is extremely hilarious and enthusiastic about what he teaches. I don’t even really like math, but I had him for a semester and very much enjoyed his class
Professor Herman is also particularly interesting!

I felt like Professor Farrar was rather engaging in Chemistry 132. He doesn’t use the normal, boring Powerpoint. He writes everything he teaches on a chalkboard, and that kept the class interesting for me and provided clarification. However, if you are into the whole Powerpoint thing, take Professor Krugh for Chemistry 131.
