Hi,
Are there lists of schools that provide support for Asperger's that update Lars Perner's (very useful, but a bit dated) lists? I'm looking for a highly selective school in the midwest or east, preferably a small college (e.g. Swarthmore, Amherst, Davidson) or a larger school that is organized in a way that provides a smaller social center for students for my son who is interested in math and chemistry. Not sure if we're interested in engineering or straight chem though. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Try getting in touch with Carolyn Komich Hare, who has established a program (AHEADD) that provides individualized mentoring to students on the spectrum at Pittsburgh area college, including Carnegie Mellon and the University of Pittsburgh, at what seemed to me to be a reasonable cost.(Not the tens of thousands a few of these programs charge, all in addition to tuition.) I believe that they had plans to expand to other regions, too.

I think I once read that the University of Pennsylvania had a program specific for these students as well, beginning with a summer program prior to matriculation.

Thanks–yes, I’m aware of AHEADD. It’s a wonderful program, but expensive, so I’m trying to locate schools that provide pieces of that program–or at least would allow us to set up that sort of support.

Consider Fairleigh Dickinson for anything to do with LD issues even Aspergers. They are renown for having a very strong program for anyone with learning issues.

Strongly consider Carnegie Mellon for Asperger’s kid, for many reasons. Particularly with science/math interests.

What specific supports do AS students need (beyond basic accommodations)? If anyone has suggestions as to what sorts of questions we should be asking Disability Services at particular schools, I would appreciate hearing from them.

I definitely second CMU and also would add Wittenberg…it’s not highly selective, but it’s a nice LAC and has good support for asperger’s

I am not sure how current this list is either but here is a list of schools put together by an educational consultant with a background in Asperger’s/NVLD

A few other schools I have heard about are Western Kentucky Univ (Kelly Autism Program); Keene State college in NH. Some larger schools such as Northeastern have fee-based LD programs that might also benefit students with Asperger’s (my own S has mild Aspergers and attends Northeastern although he does not receive any accommodations so I cannot comment on how good they actually are, but it was comforting to know that services were available if needed; also the LD director at Northeastern has a background in Asperger’s, lectures and recently co-authored a book for higher ed professionals relating to accommodating students with Aspergers). The Asperger Foundation Intl also has a list of schools on their website (but not sure how current it is either)

I do agree that is it important to look at the specific supports the student needs when looking at any school since not all students with Asperger’s have the same needs.

I have recently heard that NYIT has a strong support system for students with Aspergers. A good friend hopes to send her daughter there next year.
