What colleges and universities have good support systems/programs for kids with mild asperger's?
Debbie

Debbie, if you have not already done so, you might want to look at this thread on colleges with strong LD support that was started in the learning differences forum (also the thread on Asperger's Syndrome which may have included some discussions on specific schools):

Debbie, I recently attended a counselor conference on college planning specifically for Asperger's students. If you email me (click on my name, then hit email) with "Asperger's mom" in the subject line, I would be happy to share some of what was discussed, including colleges that have specific programs for Asperger's students -- strong LD programs aren't necessarily what Asperger's students need. If you would rather PM me first, that would also be fine, but I can't email the information to you that way.

I’m also very interested in what you found out at the Asperger’s Conference. Would it be okay if I contacted you too? If so, I did try to click on your name, but there was no “email” button there? If you could let me know how to best reach you, I’d greatly appreciate it! My son is a junior and we are looking at “most-selective” schools that support students with mild Asperger’s. I’d love to be able to get him into an AHEADD program, but it’s too expensive for us.

Thanks so much!

We are currently looking for a college for our younger son with some mild social skills support but the small colleges I have noticed with such programs are very expensive private universities. I am not interested in paying $50,000 plus per year. In particular, our son needs a very quiet dorm room and am not sure this is realistic with the noise level of dorms. Therefore, we are considering just commuting from home. George Mason University in Fairfax, VA. advertised a support program for Aspergers. Carolyn, can you please PM me with the Aspergers college support info? College on our list currently under research include: University of Alabama, University of Texas at Dallas and/or Arlington, Towson University and Salisbury University. Thanks so much.

Please note that between Posts #3 and #4 there was a two-and-a-half year gap. Please read the thread with that in mind.
