LAC's with great Engg programs

aaron56-- one other thing to look for in a LAC engineering program, is, as interesteddad mentioned, ABET certification. This program certification is very important after college for engineers practicing in the US to attain a "PE" (professional engineer's license) in various states. among other things. The ABET program cert also signifies that the program complies with set standards and ciriculum. If a LAC engineering degree is mearly a stepping stone to some other non-engineering endevour, then ABET is less important, BUT if you want to leave the possibilities open for future professional engineering, particularly in the US, then find a LAC that is ABET certified.

Swarthmore is ABET certified, as are Bucknell & Trinity. Smith I believe recently attained theirs, but they are out for you because they are a woman's college. There are LAC engineering programs out there that are not ABET certified, like Washington & Lee I believe.

Here's an ABET search web site to find colleges:

& forgot to second the Clarkson engineering program. I've had personal experience with students & prof's there & they have a very nice set of departments & do fine research. Beside ice hockey (its plenty cold there up on the St Lawrence) engineering is a primary focus of the college. BUT, I wouldn't classify them as a LAC, at least in the same broad-ciriculum sense as a Trinity or Bucknell.

This is a good thread, as it's what I'm looking for my son. (Not international though.) How about Alfred Univ in New York state? Thanks papachick for posting the ABET site.

Alfred is best known for its ceramics program, and it's very rural. That's about all I know about them.

I agree that Clarkson isn't the traditional LAC, but the people there really are great. It's also in a college town, albeit a tiny one, so there's lots of socializing to do. I have two friends at Crane (SUNY-Potsdam), and while they both gripe about the cold and snow, they love how tight-knit their college is. I imagine Clarkson might be the same.

Yea, thanks for the ABET info. Didn't know about that!

And I'd considered Alfred U at some point, but I forgot why I struck that off later on!
