LACs with strong visual art programs?

I’m looking for suggestions finding schools to add to my list, “fit” schools especially since a lot of schools that peaked my interest don’t seem like smart options at the moment (both Hampshire and Marlboro are currently no gos)
Quick stats:

  • 3.5 uw gpa, at the end of jr year (hoping to raise it this fall)
  • From Boston, currently at a very small therapeutic high school
  • Participating in dual enrollment in the fall at a local cc
  • Have taken classes at a local art college
  • Not many ECs, just art classes and book club
    What I’m looking for:
  • I’m definitely interested in pursuing the visual arts in college in a liberal arts setting
  • Literature and philosophy are also of interest
  • Open or flexible curriculum
  • SMALL, tight knit community on campus is important to me
  • The northeast is preferable but I’m open to the midwest or pacific northwest
  • Rural campus is good but I don’t want to be isolated
  • Progressive and diverse student body
    Anything come to mind?

Bard College. Very strong fine arts program. Also Skidmore.

Lawrence University, in Appleton, Wisconsin, has a strong visual arts program (though is known nationally for its music conservatory). Other midwest schools of interest would be Knox, in Illinois, which has a new fine arts building, and Earlham in Richmond, Indiana.

I’ll echo @Midwestmomofboys

Knox, Earlham, Lawrence in the midwest are excellent.

Sounds like you’re looking for a progressive, small, tight-knit Liberal Arts College.
Good places to start looking with your profile are the “Colleges that Change Lives” consortium. There is a book and a website. Some of these schools are really progressive, some slant middle of the road, a tiny number are conservative, all provide excellent educations. You’ll need to research which ones are strong in the arts.

I agree with Bard and Earlham. Those were the colleges my “artsy” kid really looked at closely. (He is at Earlham – it was more affordable than Bard for us, and he liked the diversity aspect better at Earlham.)
