Ladies and Gentlemen, I need your help.

Hello.

I'm a new member of this forum, and I guess I'm here to... ask everyone for their help. I'm in middle school, at a top public middle school in Georgia, I'm in the 8th grade and I'm 13. My plan is to attend Vanderbilt University, most likely studying Political Science or Pre-Law. My eldest sister attended Notre Dame University, majoring in Political Science. And my other sister attended Georgia Southern University, majoring in Communication Studies. See, education is of utmost importance in my family, and I really do want to do well in my life... but I'm a little unclear of what I can do to get there. I've received blessings and tips from my family, but I want some from very experienced members as well. When I am of age, I plan to become a Corporate Lawyer.

I currently have two TAG (Talented and Gifted, basically AP classes) classes, Social Studies and Language Arts, one advanced Class, Science, and I have Spanish 2. My grades have been rather lackluster in some of my other subjects, specifically math. I know I will be in Honors Bio next year, which is guaranteed to be a class I need to study in, AP American Government, Accelerated Intergrated Math, Spanish 2 (HS level), AP Literature, with tougher classes coming starting Sophomore year. In order to keep up with my law endeavors I plan to join FBLA (Future business leaders of america), Mock Trial, the Debate Team, and joining a Football team in high school. I will work very hard in high school to complete all of these goals, but my main question is... will I succeed? Is there any tips from you guys to get into the college of my choice? Any clubs you guys recommend joining? Early freshman tips? I will post on this forum every now and then, updating you guys on my journey to college, and I hope you answer the questions above.

THANKS!

By the way, sorry if this is in the wrong section, if a moderator needs to move it, that would be fine.

alright man, honestly, having your whole life planned in 8th grade is nuts! my biggest tip is to explore your interests. if you notice you have even a little bit of passion for something, whether it be some current issue like global warming, or something academic like the writings of aristotle, EXPLORE your interests. WRITE down every thought that really interests you (i just started doing this, wish i did it a long time ago).

Beyond anything else, i think the one thing that really helps admissions is passion. if you have something you are really interested in, explore it, and ACT on it. if you hear about some kind of service thing you’re really interested in, look into getting a club started at your school. if you really want to have a debate team, start a debate team. you see where i’m going? for example, i knew a girl who was big on sustainability and horses. she actually designed an environmentally sustainable barn. she got into a bunch of great schools.

You seem very intelligent just by the way that you spoke. I would say that the best advice is to prepare early for tests and study a lot!

I’d like to thank you all for your help.

I agree. You seem very intelligent. Just take high school as you would middle school. Have fun, but study and make sure you do you work, and take the toughest classes. Preparation for the SATs/SATIIs would help quite a bit. You are on the right track  Good Luck!

You’re starting way too early, the kids who obsess like you do usually end up falling much harder. Go in taking the most challenging courses available, seize any opportunities you can find for leadership or research, get involved with sports. Find what you really like, there’s no way you know what that is now. If you’re smart enough things tend to work out as they should. I just followed what I liked, got involved, got good grades, made my impact and got into Stanford. Don’t obsess, enjoy high school, go along for the ride.

no need to read all of this. kid…come back in a few years…live your life!

Whatever happened to the day where a kid lived life by the moment and thought about enjoying it instead of planning it all out? Don’t do this to yourself kid. Don’t plan your life out so hard that it stops you from being a kid. You only have one time to do it.

I was like you kid, In eighth grade i literally planned out my life like you are right now, trust me it is a total waste of time, because in life or in school shift/change happens and you can’t plan every little thing. At this moment, you are doing great but explore your interests and most importantly have fun at what you’re doing.

Go outside and play football with your friends. Don’t worry about actually getting into colleges until junior year. At this point, just do well in the hardest possible classes, and eventually you’ll really know if Vandy is right for you.
