Lafayette College Q&A: Student Life 2015-2016

Here at Lafayette College, we are a Division I School in the patriot league- but it doesn’t stop there! We have over 200 student organizations and clubs to be involved in with! From engaging with the community through the Landis Center, to being a peer tutor through the ATTIC, to playing club lacrosse, to playing trumpet in the Pep Band, there are so many ways to have fun at Lafayette! Is there a club you want to join, but want to know more about what they do? Do you want to know more about intramural sports? Please ask us any questions related to student life, activities, or organizations that you can think of! We would love to help!

Hey! I have a general question about clubs. When should we join clubs and how does the process work? Should we be looking for clubs right now? (I’m an international coming freshman)

Hi there! So in the second or so week of classes there is an Involvement Fair where all the student organizations and clubs have tables set up! You walk around and talk to club members and if it sounds interesting you usually put your name and email on a list and they’ll contact you with further information. It’s definitely a good idea to start thinking about what you want to join, but there’s no need to do more than that! Check out Lafayette’s website for information on student organizations and make sure to Like the Lafayette Prospectives Page on Facebook to get a more in-depth look at student life!

Any comments on social aspects of Lafayette College. My son is being recruited for baseball and I’m wondering if it is a place that would be enjoyable for someone who likes to have fun as well study and play baseball. What are the weekends like and how do kids have fun there?

My D is a senior there and finds Lafayette students have a great mix of schoolwork/activities/fun. I don’t know the details of her weekend activities, but she always seems busy and happy. Hopefully some students can chime in with more information.

My DS is a sophomore. From what I can tell there is always something happening on campus.
He isn’t really the party type, but there are parties.

My son spends a lot of time working at his campus job and doing volunteer work, when he isn’t studying. He also spends time with his girlfriend and friends. They sometimes go down into Easton or take the shuttle off campus on the weekends. Uber is available for times when you need/want to go somewhere outside of Easton. There are many on campus entertainment/enrichment activities and always sporting events to attend.

It really depends on what your DS considers fun, I guess. LOL It’s true though, that life at Lafayette is somewhat isolated.

@redshipman There is always something to do on campus! One of the biggest student organizations, LAF (Lafayette Activities Forum) is in charge of putting on fun events throughout the year. From Stuff-a-Plush where students can fill their own stuffed animals, to Zumbathons, to the big Spring Concert, there’s always something for everyone. The famed Tom Hanks is also coming in a few weeks to talk to students!

Athletics question: Do your teams offer “walk on” tryouts? My junior S loves Lafayette and wants to apply NEXT YEAR but he is not interested (right now) in contacting the soccer coach about playing for the team. I think this is a mistake, but he is stubborn. He is a starting player for a very competitive travel team. Assuming he is lucky enough to get accepted, I think he will want to play once he setlles in.

Redshipman - LC’s athletic teams are very social. At least once per week there is a mixer with another team.
STEM’17 - walking onto the soccer team will be very, very difficult. Your son should be in contact with the coaches now. Their team may already be done recruiting for your son’s class.

@pardullet Understood. Thank you. Maybe the club team would be better for him.

Stem’17 It can’t hurt to contact them. Club is always an option, too. Best of luck!

@STEM2017 - If your son is good enough to make the team (ie has the ability to walk on), then he should reach out to the coach now and make sure he’s recruited / on the radar. D1 sports are not for occasional players or hobbyists. The coaches will tell you now if he can play at that level. If he can, you should use that angle into the application process.

STEM2017 - I invested two years of recruiting into each of my kid’s D3 pusuits and it was worth every penny! But it is the players responsility to contact the coach. I would forget about sports for this one!

Club sports? Yes … Rugby!

Thank you @Burgermeister , @EyeVeee , @pardullet . I’m still in the “gently pushing” period of the college process with my S. Maybe later this spring he’ll get more motivated.

Hi, High School Junior here! What is the campus feel at Lafayette? Is there a large South Asian, Colombian, or French community? What do students take in their first year before deciding on a major? Is there one department that dominates more so than the other? What does this college value that sets them apart from other schools? Thanks!

Hey, I applied to Lafayette RD and I’m waiting to hear back. I live semi-close to campus, so I know the area pretty well. I was wondering if there is a shuttle from campus. If so, where does it go and how often does it leave? Thanks!
