my nephew is deciding between these schools. please comment on strengths, weaknesses, commonalities between these two schools. he would like to know which has better name recognition, a stronger alumni base and better grad school placement. he will probably major in the sciences or the humanities.

Two very different schools. Lafayette has 2400 students, BC has 10,000. Lafayette has no grad school (hence, no teaching assistants - all classes tought by professors, students have access to professors from beginning of frosh year on), BC has several grad schools (with good reputations). Both have strong grad school placement. BC is 4 times as large as LC, hence 4 times as many alum.

It depends on what your nephew wants to get out of his college experience. Small college, know your professors, know your classmates.... or big univ, big time sports, more majors to choose from, Boston nearby.

Both schools look great on a resume.

Both schools have very active alumni networks who can provide internship and job opportunities after graduation.

One thing to consider is that each school is most widely known in its own region. More people in the mid-Atlantic area would be likely to recognize Lafayette, while more people in New England would recognize BC.

I do believe that Boston Colleges name/reputation travels further geographically than Lafayette. BC is known and respected nationwide, whereas Lafayette is more regionally known. My daughter chose BC based on it being her top / most prestigious school accepted to ( and she was accepted to Lafayette). She is very happy and active there...There are strong alumni connections there as I am sure there are at Lafayette..
