At 10:30 AM you can figure no more than an hour, I would estimate 40-50 minutes (Of course this is NYC so if there is weird traffic all bets are off). The $30 is about right including tip. It’ll be cheaper if he takes the 59th ST. Bridge and more if he takes the midtown tunnel.

That is about right. If traffic is not bad, that trip should be about 40-45 minutes (can be faster if you get one of the drivers who thinks red lights, speed limits etc are an insult:), you can figure an hour at most. Only caveat is if something is going on that screws up traffic, but if the driver goes over the Queensboro it is a relatively straight run across 59th st then up Broadway. In terms of fare that is roughly correct, but if they take the tunnel the toll is in there (which I think it something like 5.50 right now)…,and traffic and such can make it higher, i would figure probably 35 at the outside (for some reason unlike JFK it isn’t a flat toll).

You could do it via public transit but I would not recommend it, Laguardia is not conveniently located (it would take a cab or bus ride to the subway, and a relatively long subway ride, and I would also be concerned about lugging luggage and an instrument on it)

The other alternative is to look into a car service kind of deal, but it will be the same or more then a cab.

When my D first traveled to NYC by herself, we used the Shared Ride Van service from SuperShuttle ([SUPER SHUTTLE LAX SFO DEN PHX DFW TPA JFK BWI IAD SAN DCA SMF MCI IAH LGA MSP EWR AUS SNA HOU BUR DAL OAK BNA ONT LGB RDU SJC AZA ISP PTP PIE CDG ORY BVA Airports](http://www.supershuttle.com))

Having travelled from LaGuardia to midtown as a non-New Yorker a couple of times, and as one of the thriftier people on the planet, I confirm that public transport is NOT the way to go. The guidebooks to NYC that I have read also advise against public transport from LaGuardia. For a first-timer to NYC and for a young student, the cab is the way to go–door-to-door service in which very little can go wrong and in which the time factor is more predictable than public transit.

tom, one additional major consideration may be the December weather, both in terms of flight issues and ground transport. Is the timing tight or does she have some flexibility?

Hunt, why would you want to take a helicopter there when you could just fax yourself to the audition via the molecular reconstruction, ala Gibson’s All Tomorrow’s Parties … ;)

Well I was thinking more along the lines of a paragliding entrance for D with loud speakers blaring “The Ride of the Valkyries”. Simple but elegant.

Actually, one thought about traffic and timing as an FYI…Mid December is in the middle of the holiday season, when traffic can be heavy due to the holiday season rush, so you may run into heavier then normal traffic, especially in manhattan. Probably won’t be that bad, given the time of day, but it is something to plan for.
