I was wondering about the Language Corridors at Scripps--actually the Italian corridor, to be specific. Does anyone know where last year's corridor was located (which dorm), and how difficult it may be to break into the group? Thank you so much for reading.

What do you mean by break into the group? Are you a prospective or current student? :)

Oh, daughter is prospective who has expressed interest in the Italian immersion LLC, among many other wonderful things about Scripps. We were wondering how fluent one would need to be…4 years of classes fluent, or native speaker fluent…and if there is a waiting list for these LLCs. Thank you so much for asking.

I’m an alum from several years past, but from what I remember about the language hallways was that students could live in them beginning sophomore year. I believe you had to interview with a professor from the appropriate language department and that selectivity really depended on the year (they usually reserve X rooms for each corridor, so if they get more applicants than rooms reserved, it becomes more selective). I think they allowed many levels of proficiency, so fluency wasn’t a requirement. When I was there, they also had a language resident, usually a student from a country where that language was the primary language, living in the hall. This student worked with the RAs to plan events specific to the language and oftentimes the language resident’s culture as well. The halls rotate yearly between Toll, Clark, Dorsey, and Browning, so you’ll never be in the same hall twice if you live in a language corridor for more than a year.

stickypenguin, thank you so much for providing insight into the language hallways! Please share anything and everything about Scripps for us. Thanks again SP.
