I'm looking at Reed for chem and physics, what with the reactor and all. It seems to have a very good program in these areas, but I was also hoping to pick up a minor in Spanish in college since I'll be fairly close to it already with AP credit and I think it may be very useful in the future. Is Reed's foreign language program totally bad or is it at least somewhat good? I don't think Reed has any foreign language majors but it does have several minors in all the typical languages (Spanish, French, German, etc.) Am I correct?

Actually, Reed doesn't have any minors, only majors. However, I've heard good things about the Spanish program and you could definitely take the classes. I can't help much more beyond that since I'm going to be an incoming fresman. :P

Reed's language instruction is actually very good. As one piece of indirect evidence, look here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=61320

I studied Russian there many years ago and got excellent training.

Whoa! That stat is amazing, for a school that's supposedly strongest in sciences. Thanks.

Sim, thank you for asking this question. My S2 is very interested in Reed, would be a physics/chem major. My major objection is that he has studied Japanese since 2nd grade, and I don't want him to lose those skills. He would have to take Japanese classes at Lewis & Clark. I'm still concerned that it would fall by the wayside if it's too inconvenient. At the last college fair we went to, the representative didn't even know if there was transportation between the campuses.

it may be fairly quiet since school is out, but someone should be able to answer your question
while Reed doesn't have Japanese classes, there are asian majors on campus and he may be able to start a group or something closer than L & C to keep up his skills
