Hi all,
I’m applying to UC’s and CSU’s and as a CA resident I took two years of Spanish (aka the bare minimum, when three is reccomended) because the third year conflicted with a four-year biomedical pathway I take. How do I explain this? For CSU’s I doubt it will be a huge issue but I am slightly concerned about this harming me at UC’s. If it helps, I do mention how I went to Arabic school for ten years in the “Coursework other than A-G” section.
http://ucop.edu/agguide/a-g-requirements/e-language/index.html describes other ways to show proficiency in a language other than English, so you may want to see if you can present such proof of your Arabic proficiency.
You are fine for CSU’s with the 2 years Spanish. For the UC’s, while you may be admitted, you would need to fulfill the Foreign Language requirement in college - presumably much harder. If you get admitted to a UC and plan to accept, I would explore completing Spanish 3 in a UC approved online class this spring. This is my junior daughter’s plan but a UC is not her primary target. With all that said, definitely see if you meet the requirement with the Arabic.
@ucbalumnus Thank you for the link.
@my2caligirls Thanks for the advice, I’ll definitely ask my counselor about that. I’ve tried looking at meeting the requirement via Arabic but I’m not entirely sure about how to go about it/get universities to let me take a placement test even though I’m not a student.
