Languages (x-posted in williams)

how is the language department? does the 5cc add a lot of choices, and if so, is it really a hassle to take classes outside of amherst?

In which language(s) are you interested?

For one, I was history major w/ a science concentration (premed) but also took some adv Japanese courses (4th year & semniars). These classes alternated betw Smith and Amherst in the fall & spring semesters as there were people in the JET program (teach English in Japan) from SC & MHC also. No hassles at all cross-registering.

Why don't we have joint Williams Amhrest forum? lol

Well, CC could arrange the Amherst, Williams, etc. under a "Little Three" or "Little Ivies" forum.... :-)

It really depends which language... which do you mean?
And while it's simple to cross-register at the other four colleges, the logistics of getting there and getting back to campus if you have class right before or right after are hard to figure out (unless you have a car), because the PVTA (Pioneer Valley Transportation Authority) has stupid complicated inefficient bus routes.

Do any of the 5 colleges offer portuguese (angola/portugal) and mandarin?

I believe Amherst itself has Mandarin (??? almost positive) and so do at least 3 (I think 4) of the other 4 colleges. Portuguese is offered through the 5 colleges, too.

Woot! Thanks for the info. : )

AC most definitely has Mandarim. They may still have weekly language (Chinese, Japanese, etc.) tables in the faculty dining hall (way better food than Valentine).

Umass has Portuguese -- check out the online catalog:
