Laptop advice?

I'm looking for a laptop for college and I could really use some guidance. Here is some info about me:

Major: Math/Economics
Budget: $600-$1100
Things I want: 13-14 inch screen, light, reasonable speed/processor, reliable, a Mac if possible, metallic design is preferable
Things I don't want: Windows 8, a touch screen

I will not watch much video or use any design programs.

I'm really torn on getting a Mac vs a PC. The Mac would be a stretch with my budget, although I could afford it. I've also been looking at a couple of PCs in the $700 to $800 range, but I really can't find anything I really like. I think I would like a 13 inch MacBook Air, but it would cost me another $300-$400. Is it worth it? Would an older MBA for around $950 be a good idea? Suggestions?

Divide any cost differences by 365x4 to see if the pennies per day are worth the compromise. If not, get what you want; it will last four years.
