HI everyone,
I recently read something and wanted to learn more about it. I will be attending a 4-year university in the Fall, and I received an outside full-ride scholarship. I also just received a smaller scholarship. I was wondering if schools allow you to consider a laptop an educational expense? This way, I could use the new scholarship to purchase a laptop.
Thank you,
There are schools where you have to report any outside scholarships to the FA office. Also, are there any restrictions on how to use the scholarship (that is, the amount can only be used for tuition)?
You need to ask the COLLEGE if they will add the cost of a computer to your cost of attendance. So…call them…and ask.
Whether or not you can use the smaller scholarship to purchase a laptop computer depends on the terms of the scholarship. If the school didn’t award this scholarship, the school has no say in it. If the question is can a scholarship used to purchase a laptop be treated as tax-free, that depends on whether or not the laptop is a required item that each student must have under school policy or it is specifically required for a class that you are enrolled in.
