laptop choice

there's a fair going on in my area where you get really cheap prices for PCs and parts (ends this tuesday). what kind of laptop do you recommend? am looking into HP/Compaq brand.

i'm a geek so don't worry about me not understanding the jargons. :D

Get a Dell if you are cheap. They are fairly good low-end budget models.

I would recommend you to get ASUS or Fujitsu-Siemens. Avoid HPs -- it's like a lottery...

computer fair's can have good deals but they can also be dangerous. if you are not computer savvy, i would not recommend purchasing a laptop from a fair unless you can bring a friend who knows a lot about computers along with u

anyone order from Newegg.com I checked out their notebooks and they seem to have some good deals.

I advise against buying a laptop from Newegg.com. If something goes wrong the the laptop, newegg is not really "likeable" when it comes to customer service.

Get a Mac.

If you must have a PC, either Toshiba or IBM. No Dells--they're garbage.

I don't mean to flame here, but you really have something against Dell...have you ever owned one?

Dell has an ok quality. My school's laptops are all dell latitude from few years ago. However, I would suggest getting a HP laptop rather than dell

i've never owned a dell, but everyone who knows me knows that i despise them. one of my friends actually contacted a lawyer and contacted dell just for them to fix his laptop. of the rest of my friends who have had dells, i'd say 8/10 of them have replaced their hard drives after about a year. so if you buy a dell, def. purchase a 3 year warranty, cause chances are you'll be needing it.

AMD turion? that one is about $2000 cheaper (approx US$450 cheaper) with every specs same.

DO NOT EVER GET A DELL. period.

(DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT IT)

I like my laptop.

HP Pavilion Entertainment Notebook PC.

I agree with rytis... ASUS. One of their laptops, I believe its the W2, looks exactly like a powerbook (but black) and comes with so many features. Look for it on Newegg, but it's quite expensive though. Don't get HP; they might have good deals sometimes, but I currently have the entertainment notebook (DV4030 15.4"). The hinges break easily, and its quite scary that the screen was never stable to begin with . Their hinges are two pieces (at least on the entertainment ones), and are held together my a snap rivet or something, and if that rivet breaks, your laptop's body is soon shot. I might get a new one with scholarship money :) The performance on HPs are okay though.

Don't listen to people who say "Don't buy Dell". I have desktop from Dell, my stepdad hes desktop from Dell and they both work FINE.

I haven't had trouble with mine. How long is the battery life? 1.5 hours?

i dont have anything against dell desktops (sorry, should have clarified that...) we have those at the computer magnet program at our school (#1 in the country) and they work fine....

however, i think the laptops are an exception. I have had one myself, and had many problems with it, several people at my work have complained about their dell laptops, and my sister complained about hers (she now has an IBM thinkpad, and has no complaints). I believe there are many more reliable companies out there to purchase from...just my two cents
