Mom doesn't want me to purchase a 'pimped out laptop' because she's afraid it might get stolen..what should I do? I need to purchase a laptop for my next four years at Cornell and want it to have a lot of memory, power, hd space, good specs, etc. but my mom doesn't want me to spend too much money on it for fear it might get stolen? Is there any way I could attach it to my desk with a lock device or something? Thanks for the help everyone...! Please give me some advice!

You can buy those security locks they use at best buy and stuff to secure their laptops. There are plenty of lock devices on sell, I'm sure targus makes them.

neone else?

I think macbook pros even have a small slot on the right side that lets you lock it. Lol, it even has a car alarm that you can set which goes off if it is picked up.

but a lock for 30 bucks to appease her. get a "pimped out" laptop. the more powerful it is, the less soon you'll need to replace it.

all the laptops, and lots of other electronics too, have a little hole where the lock attaches, and then you can just loop the cable around your desk or bed frame or w/e. they unlock with a key or combo.

however, theft is not really a problem. lock your door and it won't be an issue at all, and even if you don't lock your door, it's still unlikely that your laptop will be stolen.

they look like this: http://www.datavis.com/images/ALM/092636995478L.gif

and here are some prices: http://froogle.google.com/froogle?q=laptop%20cable%20lock&oe=UTF-8&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wf

Kensington locks are awesome... but they do have their limitations.

Since they click open immediately after inputting the correct combination, it takes only several minutes for a potential thief to crack open the lock (3 digit combo...)

So with a Kensington you can leave your notebook unaccompanied for a few minutes if you have to... but if you keep it in your room (and the room is unlocked and you're out of the room), I'd suggest keeping it in the hiding place.... or something like "hide" the notebook in the coat closet and lock it to the rack.

Another downside to Kensington locks is the fact that the computer could be yanked out of the lock...

However, the chassis would become severely damaged at the location of the lock (any thief knows this) and a broken lock port is an obvious indication of stolen material, so this shouldn't be a problem

There are a few things you can do to deter or even prevent theft, and in the case of a theft, protect your assets.

Get a computer lock, as has been mentioned.

Purchase a STOP Plate.

Insure it.

If you do one, two, or all of them, you have fairly good protection on your asset. Also, common sense goes a long way. Don't leave your computer unattended, make sure to always keep your door shut and locked when you're away from your room, and keep it locked unless it's being transported.

i don't think there are any professional laptop thiefs in the incoming class. anybody tempted to steal your laptop from your unoccupied room would look and see that it has a cable lock and say "well, can't take that one." most dorm thefts are the result of temptation (i.e. stupidity on the part of the owner, like leaving your ipod on the communal kitchen table overnight).
