Chances of a laptop getting stolen?

Especially if u leave it in your room?

I've heard that only stupid people who leave their doors open when they leave or leave their laptops idling in public for hours on end unattended get their laptops stolen. I don't think you need to worry, just use a shred of common sense.

If it concerns you, consider your options:

get a lock. Lock it to something.

affix a STOP plate, or something similar.

insure it.

I wouldn't insure an $800 lappy, but insurance for a $2500 machine might not be a bad idea, especially if you're prone to dropping things (like me.)

I know insurance paid off at least once for me.

I'm planning of getting a Macbook Pro soon, and upgrading it to around $2800. What's a good laptop insurance company, and approximately how much would it cost?

I'm sure someone will come on the thread and say, "OMG! That company suxxors!" But, I went through http://www.safeware.com/ and it was great. Fast service, nice people, good coverage.

I never lock my door and I always leave my laptop in my room. Nothing has ever been stolen, though it depends on what building you live in. Also, I leave my laptop alone in the library all the time and it's always still there.

UCLAri - approx how much do u pay for your laptop insurance?

First, check your parents' insurance policy to see what property of yours, if any, is covered for theft while you are at school. Then, check out the student personal property insurance offered to Cornell college students by an insurance company. You will get a brouchure in the mail about it this summer. As with anything like this, read it carefully and decide if it is a good deal for you. It may be, depending on what of value you may have besides your laptop. Check into any other insurance opportunities. At a minimum, get a lock and use it.

I think it's around $200 for the premium for a year.

But just Google it up. You'll find something.

My son had his lap top taken from his room at Cornell. If it's not locked down it's gone!

Why not just get AppleCare??

I keep my laptop locked to my desk most of the time. But it's pretty safe anyway. I leave my door unlocked probably about half of the time.

Just don't leave it unattended in a public place and you'll be fine.

It happens definitely. I've even heard of it happening recently in Balch. The best thing to do is lock your door if no one's in the room.

I dont think applecare covers theft.

how theft-prone are desktops?

it won't get stolen unless you're really dumb about it. You're more likely to break it than it is to get stolen.

Yeah, because you're obviously really dumb when your dorm gets broken into when you're gone.

His point is that people don't randomly break into other peoples' dorms here. The only real chance of getting a laptop stolen is if you leave it in the open with your door wide open while you're away, inviting people in to steal it. You don't always need to make a sarcastic comment, UCLAri.

In this whole thread, the only really sarcastic thing I said what that post. So you don't always need to make a generalization, towerpumpkin.

I'm not talking about just this thread. I'm talking about a lot of your posts in general all over CC.
