I'm going to be a freshman in SEAS studying BME and also on the track for pre-med. I'm looking to buy a laptop. I really like the Toshiba models, so I'm looking to get one of the Toshiba Satellite series. I originally planned to get the A505-6996 or one of the later ones in the series (6997, 6998, etc.), but it appears they've been sold out.

So if anyone knows about the Toshiba satellite series, which one do you think is the best to take to college? More importantly, is there another laptop model you would recommend more?

thanks.

I’d recommend Lenovo in general, especially the Thinkpad Edge or Ideapad Y460. The Asus U30JC is also a great laptop. What size do you want and what’s your price range?

If you have the money, the Alienware M17x is amazingly fast for everything.

Don’t forget to make use of student discounts…I know theres ones for HP and Dell (8-10% off), I believe for Mac too…check out the campus bookstore website.

thanks. Anyone else?

Also, gunther, the ideadpad y series look amazing. Right now, I’m looking at the Y560 model. It’s pretty expensive, but my parents are pretty willing to. At this rate I want one thhat’s probably no bigger than 16" and costs at most a little over $1000

Btw, how are the graphics for these laptops? I was told I need one with a good graphics card.

Also, what your opinions of this laptop from Toshiba? [Satellite A500-ST56X6 Laptops PSAT9U-02S007 | Toshiba](http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/pdet.to?poid=470547)

would you recommend this or the Ideapad Y560?:

The Y560 is an amazing laptop. I’d recommend it for sure if 15 inch is the size you want. Let me know when you’re going to buy it, if you decide to, and I’ll try to find a deal for you.
The ATI graphics in the Lenovo have twice the dedicated memory the Nvidia one has in the Toshiba. So I can’t do any benchmarks, but I’d likely say the Y560 has better graphics.

idk about the graphics, but either way, an additional $300 seems rather expensive just so I play games, something I’ll probably not be able to do in college anyway
