For current students, which is more useful?

Right now, I'm leaning toward a laptop, because it avoids clutter. I can just fold it up and work on a clean desk. It's also hard to play games on, so I won't be tempted to play games. Any inputs?

I'm probably gonna stick with a desktop. Better speakers, less likely to be stolen, generally cheaper for the same (or better) processing power.

PC's have nothing over good old fashioned pen and paper.

Well if thats an option it's a no brainer. I like those ported (what the devil do they call them?) stations that you can put your laptop in to make it function like the tower of a desktop.

Im brining my desktop no doubt, and if I get there and it seems I can't live without a laptop, then I'll get one. I don't think laptops are conducive to taking notes, I am much faster with paper and pen, not to mention all the distractions on computers.

Get a desktop, and carry it on you around campus along with a good old cathode ray tube monitor (17" minimum.) This way you won't need to go to the gym.

laptop, no question. unless you are a really slow typer, it beats a pen and paper hands down. as for distractions, well, thats kind of up to your own wiring (hehe)... i'm not that easily distracted in class so it doesnt really apply...

The question depends on your financial situation and your own personal needs.

For myself, I found a laptop decent priced and had all the features I wanted. I also knew I would take better notes with a laptop. At the same time, I wanted to bring my computer home to work on stuff too (when I did go home for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Spring Break) it was fantastic.

Also, if you live in the dorms, you have access to computers. If purchasing a computer isn't currently going to work for your budget, you can utilize campus resources.

Also, some classes, you might not need your laptop. For two of my science classes (which were actually introductory science classes for non-science majors...e.g. Physics 10 "Physics for Future Presidents" with Prof. Muller and IB/EPS C82 Oceanography with Prof. Ingram and Prof. Powell), using a laptop in class would be a pain because I had to draw diagrams and stuff. And I'm not quick enough to do that on a laptop.

So far, everyone agrees on laptops, but desktops do have their advantages though.
Desktops are more powerful. Are there any classes that would require fast processors?

Personally, I prefer desktops for one big reason - they're not easy to steal. With laptops, you constantly have to worry about properly locking them up, as somebody can snatch your laptop in just a few seconds and walk out with it hidden inside a backpack. Desktops, by comparison, are far more difficult to pilfer.

i have the same plan as scapermoya (cant really see much of the case or specs from u pic, but nice that u got a amp... ppl usually dont have those)

i definately gonna take a desktop, u just cant game on a decently-priced notebook

can u borrow tablet notebooks like at irvine and LA?

if not i guess i can always get a 500-700$ used dell (i like dell cuz i havent seen any other notebooks w/ music buttons as good as theirs) when i feel like doing so

i m not sure but i'd bet 1k$ notebooks r much more commonly stolen than 2k$ or 500$ ones
