I will be attending W&M in the fall and was wondering: is it possible to get a laptop other than the suggested Thinkpad and still have the coverage the Thinkpad bundle receives? I would like to have a better laptop and the College only offers a deal with one. Anyone have any suggestions on what to do? (I can't lie, I'd like to be able to play games on it as it will be my only computer)

Yes, you may bring you own laptop. Policy is everyone needs their own.

I actually was wondering the same thing.
I already have a laptop that's barely a year old--I don't really want to buy a new one just to get the coverage.

I've heard we're kind of on our own--IT can help us out, but probably not as well.

You can bring your own laptop. The only real difference is warranty service. Software issues are pretty much covered for all computers regardless of brand (as long as the OS is Windows... Mac support is not very extensive). For hardware problems, IT keeps a stock of spare parts on hand for the myNotebooks, so repairs are usually same-day or next-day. IT will still service your computer if you have a Dell or another model of IBM/Lenovo, but they often have to order the parts which means repairs will take a few extra days. If you have another brand of laptop like HP or Sony, you have to go through the manufacturer for warranty repairs.

The IT department at WM has updated their myNotebook options to include Apple laptops for the 2008-2009 year. You can buy your Apple Macbook or Macbook Pro here:

Apple Laptop Specifications | IT

When purchasing, keep in mind that with myNotebook Apple purchases, you will receive the 3 years of Applecare as a complimentary bonus, with the ability to purchase an extra fourth year. Also, if you purchase your Apple laptop before September 15th, you receive a free iPod Touch (or smaller iPod if you prefer) and you are eligible for a free printer after $100 rebate as well.

Please stop dragging old threads back to life - especially when there are more than one on the same exact topic, and all you're doing is advertising.
