Any word on the laptop specs Bzzzt?

Sorry, left for the weekend, and haven't been to the book store recently. I'll get them tomorrow morning, I have class next door. Check back at lunch or so!

M4Me, I heard the same thing from my cadet. Next years plebes may as well have a sign around their neck in the fall :)

I see there is a printer included! I thought I read somewhere cadets have to bring their own printer. Does anyone know for sure whether class of 2010 will be issued printers?

We were issued printers, 2010 should be too.

any word on the specs yet?
my guess:
Intel® CoreTM Duo Processor T2600 (2.16GHz, 2MB Cache, 667MHz FSB) with Intel Centrino® Mobile Technology(hopefully)
NVIDIA Quadro® FX Go1400 256MB
2GB of DDR2 533MHz SDRAM memory
15.4" anti-glare wide screen WXGA display or WSXGA and WUXGA active matrix (TFT) UltraSharpTM displays
80GB1 capacity internal hard drive

whatever you get, it will be 10,000 times better than the 2006 CD ROM drive catching on fire, hard drive failing, fans exploding, buttons falling off hunks of junk that we got. be happy

HA, Screaming Eagle--at least you got a brand name computer and a lap top...my class got some off brand that went out of business...nearly my entire class had to replace our monitors (walking from Scott Barracks to Goldcoats with a monitor half the size of me is no fun...), most had our harddrives crash, fans burn out, and some even had the monitors catch on fire....All I got to say is, at least you can easily carry your computer to Goldcoats...those were not fun trips..but we all made them...

psh...I was hoping for 2 gigs of ram...oh well....
Is it at least all one card so we can easily expand without buying two new ram cards? Do they let you choose which model you get? And does the second model come with an extra battery. I guess I will find out soon enough. Do they issue the computer or have you purchase it?

just thinking of west point's internet gives me shivers. i could probably install debian in 15 minutes.

the first model is better for sure. better graphics card, bigger screen. But maybe the 17 is to big to carry around everywhere.

Ok, to clarify...

They haven't chosen the model yet. These are the two options. I haven't a clue about the slots, look up the models on the Dell website for a better idea. I'm fairly sure they both come with two batteries, there's an accessory pack added to this. They issue the computer like they issue you books, uniforms, and everything else. It comes out of your cadet "funny money" account, which is where that 2400 dollar check was deposited, and where a goodly portion of your paycheck goes each month.

Don't mess with the network here. Goldcoats and the IT department monitor it and they will find you. It's a government network and tampering with federal property is never a good idea. I'm not sure if you'll be allowed to run Debian on your own machine, I've never asked. But yes, my connection, right now, is 100 MBPS.

Army Combat Uniform...the new getup they're shelling on us this year. i've heard good and bad comments on the thing.

check if out for yourself...

sorry fellas...didn't see the second and third page of this thread

Better graphics card? This may be a novice view but isn't 512 MB card better than a 256 MB card? (I know with graphics cards theres more to it, but they look identical other than the amount of onboard ram)...and the 'turbocache' which sounds like an improvement, or should be
