Any computer savy CC'ers have an educated opinion on the class of 2010's computer?

looks good to me, but that usafa foldy laptop thing was sav beyond belief.

Looks like a pretty solid setup. If it was my notebook probably look to try to find a docking station. That way all peripherals are plugged in once and the notebook just slides in and out of the docking station.

I am a bit surprised that they do not issue convertible notebooks to go from a Tablet to regular keyboard. Very handy to take notes or do sketches. Then flip around and you can type whatever you need to type.

Looks nice. Did they leave off the ram? I don't know if a tablet is really necessary, but I would have liked to see a color capable printer. Guess its back to black and white...

That was one problem I saw was the printer. The two classes before 2010 recieved printer/scanners which would be nice for copying things that got misplaced or notes we missed. I think I am going to buy something like this http://pctekonline.stores.yahoo.net/acdi692dino.html for taking notes in calc, chem and physics. Its a digital notepad that transfers everything you write to the computer.

I'm curious how much liberty we have with our computer set up, and how we use our computer (For example the docking station and the tablet attachment). Are things like this allowed? Whats the official policy on games and music? If I remember reading correctly it changes with each company..? And lastly, if we have the money kicking around are we allowed to purchase an incoming classes computer?

The only problem with the computer is that it is not a Mac :p

My high school has a state of the art lab running all macintoshes...literally about 750+, and thats what I can think of off hand. Did I add the system sucks and crashes ALL the time. Macs are good for artists who need one to run adobe photoshop or 3D programs...but as far as functionality and business in the real world, go with the industry standard: windows/pc.

looks pretty good

I heard mentions of Air Force's computer...Does anyone know what Navy and the zoomies got?

I hear from a buddy of mine going to navy that his computer is relatively underpowered compared with the other service acadamies.

Apparently annapolis lacks a wireless network so they have a desktop dell with I think a 2.8 GHz P4 and 512MB Ram. He is tech saavy so it is an understatement to say he was disappointed. But we don't go to the academies for the computers lol.

I think air force gets a tablet with a 1.83 centrino and specs to match.

question to a current cadet: does everyone use mytunes redux or something like that to share music or is that banned at the academy?

...I think the USMMA is really getting an unfair rig in comparison to us...Its some off brand I haven't heard of.

I think the long gray line is getting the best one this year so far. I would hate to try to run any enginneering/CAD programs on that Navy rig...Just running Windows Media Player, Firefox, and Microsoft Word, you might be able to run up 458 MB or so. God forbid, you run some higher end design program...

Has anyone heard the story as to why Navy isn't issued laptops, hahaha:)

--cliff notes is they couldn't keep track of whose was whose and mixed them up permenently and had "no way" to figure out the original owners??? Well anyhow, they get desktops cause they can't be trusted with mobile computers:)

ragmanlaw: I like desktops better than laptops any day (unless I'm moving it somewhere).

Uhm. I'm using a computer with these specs right now:
1.9 GHz
512MB DDR Ram
More than 160GB (we have lots of programs, video games, and user files, but 160GB is proficient for me)

Now, I can run Winamp, Firefox, Microsoft Word, and Photoshop at the same time without having any problems. Are you saying with a better computer I am limited to do less? I'm no genius with computers, but I disagree. I could be wrong, though.

Besides, we're helping Dell get rid of all these old computers (word on the street is something about dual core). ;)

All my friends have been asking me and I'm not sure, can we have webcams at West Point to talk to our friends?

I know they give them to peole at King's Point

Web cam? Soudns like a waste of time just like Myspace/facebook/aim/final fantasy/mmorpg/forums... I don't need any distractions at West Point. Skip the webcam. Give me what I need to be successful, not comfortable.

I plan to call people at West Point when I have freetime (which I know will be limited) so being able to see each other would help, it's not like I'm gonna make a website for people to watch me on, just so we can see each other.

ragmanlaw I dont know if you have been at college yet or are going right from highschool but Myspace/facebook/aim/forums are what get you through the day, especially at military school. I know at NMMI we checked myspace all the time. It is a waste of time but its a nice break from running around and being in the military. It makes you feel almost like a real college kid. And I hope we can use webcams. Its nice when your having a bad day or feel crappy and call home. And if you can see who your calling its a nice bonus.
