Hey,

Entering freshmen business major.

I am thinking about getting a laptop. Probably a windows. Is there any way I can get a deal with the campus bookstore. Or should I just get a dell / HP?

Any suggestions on what I should get?

Thanks.

I’m pretty sure the bookstore only has Macs. My son and I didn’t see any pcs there. Costco has a nice laptop (HP I think) and a printer on sale right now. Look at the
on-line store.

What are kids doing now? My older son has a laptop in his room at college, but he uses his netbook exclusively for class and the library. Are kids buying both or taking a desktop and purchasing a netbook?

Desktops, laptops, netbooks, iPads and don’t forget the Kindles. The computing options are enormous. The best tool(s) depends on the demands of their major and their own work/study habits. My recommendation based on the experience with my son is to wait until your s/d has had a chance to ‘get into it’ before buying anything. For him it turned out to be a 15" MacBook Pro which, being an all PC family, never would have happened had we not waited.

We were thinking a desk top in the room and probably a netbook to carry around.
Is the reliability and memory of a netbook just as good as a comparible laptop?

We just got my older S a Netbook at Christmas and he loves it. He even brought it home over spring break versus the laptop.

He is coming home next week and I am going to ask him what he thinks and I will report back to the group. He really likes that it is smaller and light weight. But he is a history/anthropology major, not engineering or a major that may need more memory, etc.

S going to CP is business.

LSkaiWalk—Usually on El Corral bookstore’s website, they give you a link to Dell, but for some reason, there isn’t one. If you want to look at online student discounts or customize your PC, try Dell University, HP, Lenovo or any other PC makers. Or call the bookstore and ask how to get your Dell student discount.

Soon and throughout the summer, all of the computer makers should have sales, both online and in brick & mortar stores, aimed at high school grads/college freshmen and their parents.

[Your Member Purchase Program | Dell](http://premier.dell.com/portal/messages.aspx?c=US&l=en&s=eep&cs=RC809315)
I do remember having my parents buy the laptop I’m typing this very message on right now as a graduation gift. I got a slight discount for going through the campus’ link, but not all that much.

Even though you are a business student and not a CSC, I’m still going to recommend that you set up your laptop to dual-boot between Linux and Windows. This allows you to login to the school’s network without the annoying Cisco Clean Access.
