laptops

Roommate issues were abundant with the 3 girls I lived with freshman year (they were constantly going through my stuff and a friend suggested I do the locking thing with the ctrl+alt+delete thing...the three geniuses tried to guess the password to my computer, but I caught on and changed it too frequently for them to figure anything out). I'm not the most trusting person in the world on a good day, and as a bio/chem science kid whose computer was a life line somedays it wasnt something to be messed around with and when they started messing with my stuff and rearranging it we got the docking station so I could lock the computer into the dock and the dock to the desk and keep them from wandering off with it/ or having an easier time messing with it (the ipod I hid in random drawers wandered onto my roommates side of the room and was found on her desk on several occasions, letters from my then bf were found on her desk). I'm sure it's not necessary with most roommates, we just had serious issues at times, so with mine it was. Now I guess I'm just untrusting of roommates/suitemates and keep the door locked and my things put away so they don't wander off. If I have a roomie next year, I'm sure the docking station will be making its appearance once again. I guess its more paranoia on my part than anything. Sorry if I was confusing/gave completely unecssary info in this...those 3 girls just really bugged me by doing this

CarolinaGirl86, thanks for clearing that up. Alright, that's good to know. In terms of Mac issues, I was thinking of using Boot Camp and just running Windows on my computer (unless that turns out to be more annoying than just using their software).

CarolinaGirl86,
Thanks for explaining. I did not mean to pry, but didn't know the docking station was a security measure.

esquivalience you dont need to install another harddrive in your laptop. for the programs 80 gb should b more than enough. if you start keeping alot of big files, i'd just get an external harddrive, it'd be cheaper than having an internal installed. but yea you could just say any big files (like pictures video) onto the external and that should be fine.

Mom 15, No problem. That wasn't prying at all, I think everyone I know has gotten the joy of hearing about those 3 girls. Asking questions is always a good thing. Feel free to ask away....at least on here answering questions my procrastination is hopefully beneficial to someone.

So I got a full CCI laptop grant. Does that mean that I keep it for all four years and then return it, or do I return it after my four years at UNC?

How did you find out?

I got a letter, but I was curious...do I have to return it after my four years at UNC?

no, you don't have to return the laptop.... yours to keep

does the laptop grant show up online? cuz it didnt say anything bout it on my online FA+scholarships

so if you damage your laptop you can get it fized, but you have to pay $250? It says that it's a deductible.

that is what I have read as well

yea so I guess you have to pay 250 on the spot, and then you can deduct it

I got a full grant too... actually I got two letters to the effect... wonder if that means I get 2 laptops!??!? lol

nice... I was sondering if you get a grant do you just get the basic laptop, which I think is the r series, or do you get one that is higher up. I got the full grant and got the R61 package, but I was wondering if people who got the grant got a higher one.

I think all the grants are for the R61 laptop

So you can just upgrade to another one if you want and pay the difference?

yea but the difference is like 600+ dollars

I brought my own laptop. It works fine, the only difference is that you have to bring it to ITS to configure it so it'll connect to the network. My friend has a MAC, it also works fine, no need to install windows or anything.

hm thanks for everyones input, now i just have to wait to see whether i got a laptop grant
