Laptops

What is a recommended laptop for EECS?

I was thinking about an Asus EEE PC for the portability, price, and pizazz.

Should I look for a machine with more power?

Would a strictly linux machine be a problem?

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Get a Thinkpad (T60's are hot). They will last you all the way to the gates of hell and then some.

Strictly linux machines are common throughout campus for 6'ers.

An EEE PC is a good second laptop, but not as a main. As a work computer, it is practically useless. Get a more powerful, more mainstream pc. The EEE PC is not meant as an alternative to a laptop, it is meant as a supplement.

And a Linux machine probably will not be a problem. I am fairly certain that any required programs will have Linux versions too...

Get a MacBook Pro!

Fixed your typo

Thanks for the responses; I was also considering a MacBook Pro or a combo of iMac + eeepc, but I'm just not sure I can justify the pricetags...
Maybe I'll get something more middle of the road...

If you decide to but a computer online be sure to google "'brandname' coupons" first. There are often good coupons out there that can save you hundreds of dollars and they are not advertised on the computer makers own websites.

Just a tip: to find best deals on the net, check out both of these:

project athena runs entirely on debian. if anything, machines that don't have linux installed are less convenient to use at mit (the crappiness of windows itself notwithstanding).

also, as a thinkpad owner, ++ to that.
