LAS + Chem E

hey all, i was admitted to the Chem E program at UIUC, and i was wondering even though technically it is part of the LAS department, will most of my classes be at the engineering buildings? Also is there any sort of disadvantage to getting a eng degree from the LAS department?

Note that most of your classes (you or any engineering student) during first year and even second year will be in such subjects as math, chemistry, physics, writing, (other gen ed), and those classes are mainly in buildings in the main quad (just south of the engineering quad). Most engineering courses will be in the engineering quad.

There is no disadvantage to getting the chem E degree from LAS. You are dealing with a quirk of history. When Chem E was added in early 1900s, it was put in the chemistry department in LAS partly because the engineering department had no chem labs. Though officially in LAS, Chem E is closely alligned with the engineering college. Its course requirements are determined jointly by the chem department and engineering. Its engineering courses are controlled by the engineering college, and it follows the same admission criteria as engineering, e.g., you need to be in the same range (rank/test scores) as the engineering college uses for admission (in fact, chem E admittees usually have a little higher middle 50% range than the engineering college as a whole).

My daughter is a junior in Chem E, and she is an active participant in the the Engineering Council, Women In Engineering program, Engineering open house activities, etc. S he has encountered no disadvantage with Chem E being housed in the LAS college.

drusba, how about math/cs? I am currently a second year in math/cs program, and I am wondering if there might be any disadvantage compared to engr/cs?

The engineering CS is considered the more rigorous and better of the CS programs and the harder to get into. The math CS is really akin to a major in math and minor in CS.

That probably means I should switch. I will have to take chem 102, 103, and a physics sequence... How hard is the physics? I had A in all calculus classes, but I heard physics is different... Any ideas?

The physics courses are difficult for many and are considered "weed-out" courses. It is not unusual for 25% to 30% of the students in Physics 211 and 212 to get D's or worse and another 15% or more to drop out of the course to avoid getting that D or worse. Nevertheless, many do get A's and B's.

Are there any advantages when transferring from math/cs to engr/cs or the admission criteria just the same as anyone else transferring in from other majors?

I do have a GPA of 3.5 major gpa(math/cs) but I am not sure if I will do really well in physics.

The GPA cut seems pretty high for engr/cs compared to other engr majors, which is 3.2.
