I know this has already been mentioned, but your test scores are very low. Everything else is great, but based on your reaches, I think your only real chance is at NYU. Your matches are great though, so don't be upset. Also, I'm really sorry about your dad, and I'm not trying to downplay your situation, but I don't think that it will make up for your low low SAT.

This is really unrealistic. Your reaches are out of reach and your matches are reaches. Sorry, but if you're not happy with your safeties, look at rolling schools. The last 10 months can't explain away 4 years of stats and standardized tests.

I think we're really to hard on iwannagotocollege. I think if his essays are really good and they leave an impression on the adcoms, then i think he has a great chance. I screwed up with cornell because my essays were only half a page with only 200 words.

yeah, ease up on him, suze. his SAT scores may not be the greatest they'll ever come across, but he's got 10 times the character and sense of responsibility that most of these same boring applicants have.

I poured my heart and soul into my personal statement and the supplemental essays that they requested. I also sent one essay regarding my situation (getting 2 jobs this past yr) and another abuot a passion of mine.

Suze: I had planned on taking all of my standardized tests at the end of junior/beginning of senior. I truly did not expect this situation to occur.

My gpa shows an upward trend and I have excelled in many of my schools challenging classes. I know some of my schools are unrealistic but I didnt think they were out of my reach.

I can only be honest. There are tons of kids with stories of poverty, illness, crime, abuse, lack of opportunity and so on. He might as well fase now that chances are not good so he can continue applying, plan a gap year to up stats or do whatever it takes to prepare for the eventual in the best possible shape. We can all pretend that colleges look at the whole person and are really sympathetic to individual plight, but the fact is, data shows it's unlikely they will do that for a candidate that isn't hooked.

I truly appreciate your honesty suze. I will be expecting the worst.

I know I dont have a hook but I thuoght my situation, coupled with my low income status would translate into that. However, I must have been selfishly wrong. I apologize.

:-) cheering!

drinkingmilkalldaylong: I applied as undecided in the college of Human Ecology. I also applied to the HEOP program at Cornell and NYU due to my family's low income. I poured everything into my essays knowing that my academics werent strong I truly feel that I am capable of flourishing at these universities. That is why I applied.

iwannagotocollege: with all the uncertainty and strife at home, is it wise to want to go to school so far away? also, how will you pay for it?

well I have applied to many local and national scholarships. Furthermore, I do not mind taking out a loan in my name and paying it off later. However, if I do not get any money I iwill most probably take a gap yr.

What is AP American?

AP American is AP US History sorry :embarrassed:

can anyone please critique my essays and tell me if they will help me in my admissions chances?

PS any more critiques are welcome.

I do alumni interviewing for an ivy and recently interviewed a lovely young man with a similar situation. I'll tell you what I told him when he asked if the school will give him a break as his mother had been very sick for 2 years and he had myriad family responsibilities.

Yes, the school will give him points for working to help the family and will understand the stress at home. However, it would not make them understand low scores (a bit higher in his case but still way off median).
They see a lot of kids every year who overcome hardship and still emerge will top grades and scores.

I have to agree with the posters telling you to be more realistic in your choices.

Alright, kirmum, I understand the fact that I have to be more realistic in my schools. However, I really would like to attend Cornell. I am the only person applying to that particular school (Human Ecology), and all my ec's are for that school. I have sent everything that I possibly could ( supp rec, 2 additional essays, research abstract). Is there any possible chance of acceptance? I will try my level best .
