Last Financial Aid Question

Hey guys I have posted in this thread a lot about financing cornell.

I appealed and got my finalized package.

I have to pay 2990 this summer, and 2000 for the entire school year-- a feat I can do.

However my family contribution is 6500 and I have been talking to my mom for weeks now and she decided that she doesn't wan't to pay it. She can afford it, but would rather me go to a community college than pay. :(

I really love cornell and want to go, but I am a transfer student and to pay for college this year I had to loan out a maximum amount, so I don't think I can apply for a loan again.

So my question is this: although I appealed, can I appeal again and say that my mom refuses to pay for tuition, so knock down my fam contribution to 0 and let me pay the 2990 and 2000 myself?

It’s an expectation that there will be a parental contribution for somebody in the same income bracket as your mother. If Cornell just picked up the tab for every parent who didn’t want to pay, then there would be a lot of parents who didn’t want to pay.

Community college isn’t free. At least in New York State, it’s $3500 a year before books and commuting costs. Maybe you can meet your mother halfway and take out a loan to cover the rest? Taking out $3k in debt a year for a Cornell education is not bad.

Your other option is to legally declare yourself to be a financial independent.

you can always appeal. however, you have no grounds for it.

First off, the $2990 is not an amount you have to pay this summer. That is your contribution for the whole year. It will go towards personal expenses, books, transportation etc. Not necessarily to cornell.

The $2000 is your work study amount. That is not an amount you have to pay either. That is an amount they expect you to earn from work study. Then of course, you will need to use those funds to pay your bursar bill if needed.

you can get a loan to cover the amount your mother won’t pay. you can get a new loan each and every year. I don’t honestly think you have a leg to stand on in trying to get them to knock down parental contribution to $0. Think about it logically for a moment. If you could do that, don’t you think every student with a parental contribution amount would do the same thing?

Seriously…would you pass up Cornell for a community college?

wow. I wish my financial aid package from Cornell was like yours. And yes go for Cornell. Just like CayugaRed said, taking 3K in debt for Cornell is not bad at all. And you should also compare the aid with the institution you’re attending at present. Is it better, or worse? Oh and by all means don’t go to a community college. I mean seriously you’d end up having to pay for it either way (especially in NYC), so yeah that’s just my take on it. Congrats.

haha thanks for your responses guys. No I definetely wouldn’t but I went to NYU this year and it’s FA isn’t the best, so I ended up loaning out 30,000

I don’t want to get buried in debt, but cornell is worth it.

I guess I will loan out the 6500 as well. But cayuga where did u get 3k from? Is there a way to reduce the 6500 to 3k???

@Castiel - Cayuga was suggesting since your mother wants you to go to community college, it is assumed she is willing to pay for all or some of that. So perhaps you could strike a deal whereby she would pay whatever she was willing to pay for community college towards your much better Cornell education.

oh i see. well no my mom isnt willing to pay anything :(

community college would be covered by my state funded grant from florida (bright futures) plus the money i make over summer
