Last minute tips to increase Math & CR score

D is re-taking SAT on March 1, needs to improve Math from 680 to 750, any tips please? She is only getting one or two wrong from CB blue book or Barrons 2400. We have Grubers and Rocket Review also - what sections specifically in these books will help with Math? How do you improve pacing on Math?

CR she has 730 - tips to move that to a 750+ will also be greatly appreciated!
If you could review only one word list - which one would it be at this late stage?

I like Grubers mostly for math refresher sections. It also has a vocab list, but at this point she should probably know most of the words (rocket review's list is MUCH easier than Gruber's... but generally if you know most of Gruber's I guess that is fine)
Math... Rocket Review seems a little easy in terms of actual math content and mostly focuses on strategy, read it over once to know what you need strategy-wise... take the strategies with a grain of salt though bc if youre already scoring over a 720 then your strategy is most likely fine and all you need to do is REREAD THE PROBLEMS and make sure that you actually ANSWER the question.
CR... I dont know. Just make sure that there is something in the text that DIRECTLY BACKS IT UP. Read questions slowly, but don't look at the questions ahead of time.... I guess..... because the format of the questions are generally the same every test...

Thanks, she started doing the Math problems from Barrons SAT 2400, and found about 1/3 of them to be extremely hard. She just likes the College Board Blue book sections - says they are more close to the real thing. Will have her review Grubers Math Refresher section, just found it.

CR 730 harder to pick up now, but she will read the word list from Grubers and Barrons

Thanks again!

Okay, she doesn't actually need to raise the score to a 750. Her 680 is pretty much a 700, which is a very good score. If she's only getting one or two wrong, then she's doing very well.

I agree with reviewing with Gruber's. She seems to be doing fine with pacing, well enough to miss only one or two on practice tests. The only real thing with that is either learning some shortcuts or practicing more.

I guess for critical reading, she should keep doing what she does. make sure that she has a reason for picking the choice she does pick. try not to overthink it.

vocabulary-gruber's.

Remind her how well she's doing. I mean, anyone would be proud of a 730 critical reading. She's doing very well already. Remind her to do her best, get a good night's sleep before the test, get a good breakfast, bring water, and that even if she doesn't do well she can always retake it.

She just likes the College Board Blue book sections - says they are more close to the real thing.

Well obviously, its the real test questions.

I don't like the scales on the CB books, -2 on the math section can be anywhere from a 700 to 800, according to the BB.

Thanks dchow, you are right, need to keep reminding ourselves that those are great scores esp. for a first attempt. She is shooting for highly selective colleges and feels that 750 will be a threshold that MAY help her chances numberswise.

She has improved since Jan with the pacing now by practicing, doesn't want to learn new tricks now, so I will tell her to keep on practicing on the CB Math sections and review Grubers vocab. list.

I have heard that Barrons over prepares, so I think that what she meant with CB problems are more the real thing is that Barrons math problems in the 2400 book are way more tough than the "hard" problems on the SAT.

Last question for March SAT - how many can you get wrong or omit and still be in the 700+ range for Math?

Thanks to all for feedback!

If she answers all and misses 3 on the Math Section, she'll get about a 720. So if she omits 5 and gets all the rest right she should get around a 700.

But it's never a good idea to go into the SAT, PLANNING to omit a certain number of questions.

so just take the raw score and scale it with a better indicator table.

Yes it is. Plan to omit NONE, if you want a really high score.

How good do you guys think is the RocketReview's last test? They claim its the best non-CB practice test and that it's "harder than the real thing". I got -2 on that one.

i feel like rocket review was a lot easier than CB... for some reason...
rocket review's questions are the kind that make you have to read really closely/carefully... whereas on the CB you still have to be careful but not EVERY question is out there to trick you...
anybody else feel like thatt?

wow, I didn't realize how tough it was to get mid 700's in Math! Just a -3 will get you down to 720, and 5 down to 700. Okay now it is time for me to panic.....

She will not plan to omit any questions, but she has to improve her pacing on the section with gridins becoz she is running out of time to complete the last grid in

ServeDin14 when you say "misses" do you mean omit or get them wrong?

Thanks!

carsonne… you cant do that because the scale for each test is a bit different :(
