sat math prep group--advice needed!!!!

My D, a very strong student, but a lower scorer in math (upper 60's on sophomore PSAT vs. upper 70's in verbal categories), wants to do a math review group with 3-4 of her friends to maximize her score for PSAT (friends are similar level students). I have found a private tutor who has done prep work in the past and is a former HS math teacher. Any advice on how to structure this class? What books to use (teacher is flexible)? I would guess they would have 6-8 meetings before PSAT's and SAT's? What is the most efficient and productive way to do this??

Get the official collegeboard SAT book (Blue book). Practice the math sections under timed conditions, discuss methods for solving the problems and the scores will go up in no time...Wish good luck for your D

Thanks so much. That's kind of what I thought. As a supplement, what do you think of Barron's Math workbook for the new SAT?

I have the barrons math workbook too but I havent really looked in it yet

Gruber's!!!!!

Gruber's Complete Preparation for the New SAT. Go in this order.

101 Math Questions Test: This is a good review to nail down what your daughter knows and doesn't know. This should be the first thing on the agenda. How much time will it take? Well, these questions should be fairly automatic. She either knows how to do them or doesn't. Going over the ones she got wrong, of course, depends on how many she got wrong! Also note that there are typos on problems 1,2,4, and 5.

19 Math Stategies (pgs. 69-116)

I highly recommend Gruber's for Math, because it organizes types of problems into sessions, so that instead of having to review several concepts at once (which you'd have to do if you use the blue book), you can review one at a time.

I wouldn't get a tutor at all; they are a huge, and I mean huge, waste of money. All you should need is the Barron's Math Workbook and maybe Gruber's (see the above post). She can easily jump her math score 200 points with diligent use of these books. That's what I did.

Thanks for all the excellent info! I will look at Gruber's and Barron's books as well. The tutor is a former math teacher who does independent SAT prep(not a large company). The real purpose of the tutor ios to have organized sessions to help with discipline and provide a resource for answering questions. Thanks to everyone who responded again.
