Last year's US News & World Report Rankings?

Can anyone provide a link to the 2007 rankings? The 2 colleges I'm between have switched categories this year, and I'm curious where they ranked last year. (St.Michael's in Vermont and Stonehill in Massachusetts). Good scholarship at St. Mikes ( plus honors program)...not so much at Stonehill. Everytime I think I find a link for the 2007 rankings, I get the 2008 list. Any help or advice will be appreciated. Thanks!

Both are tied at #106 among Liberal Arts Colleges. I don't know enough about those schools to give you any real advice. Here's how they compare to each other:

I hope this helps. I personally heard more of Stonehill, if that helps any. However, like I said, I am not qualified to evaluate those two schools.

Thanks, Alexandre, for all that info. Does anyone else have an opinion on whether the honors program at St. Michael's + a good scholarship would tip the scale in its favor, vs. Stonehill??? Personally, I liked Stonehill better.....but the money and honors program are verrrrry tempting... Anyone??

Sorry, I don't know anything about your schools.

How much will Stonehill cost you over St. Michaels?

Do you like to ski?

UCBChemEgrad ~ Stonehill would be about $15,000 more a year. Yeah. I know. They are both rated the same in US News, and are both similar. BUT....I really love Stonehill. I just don't see how I can turn down a similar school, tho, for that kind of money. Plus, I don't ski...and I really don't like cold weather....but I would like to be in an honors program, which I would be at St. Michaels. This is a really tough decision. Everyone keeps telling me that undergrad doesn't really matter that much, and that I should take the less expensive school and save my money for grad school (or ...my parents money, mostly.... I know that it would be a bit of a strain on them to pay Stonehill's tuition. They'll have to remortgage the house, I think...) What, oh what is a gal to do.

Hmmm...can you talk to Stonehill's financial aid office about your predicament?

Tell them you really want to go there but you have a better offer at a competitor school. Maybe worth a shot.

Actually...UCB...already did that. They gave me a $6000 grant on appeal..the "gap" between the schools was initially more than 20 grand...

Ah...well, probably can't go back to that well twice - but might be worth another try...no harm in asking.

Otherwise, if your parents have to mortgage their house it's not worth it...you'll enjoy St. Michaels better knowing you won't graduate with upwards of $60k in debt. If you really hate St. Michaels after a year or two, maybe you can transfer.

You make a lot of sense UCBchemEgrad....thanks for such a wise perspective. I will give what you've said a lot of thought. Thanks again for taking the time to help...

^ You're welcome...good luck!

I have a friend whose brother went to St. Michaels and loved it. He is really into skiing and there was a very active social scene.

How about an overnight and attending a few classes at each school? My S. absolutely loved Stonehill, visited 4 times but decided it was not the right school after attending a few classes. St. Michael's is near Burlington, a terrific college town.

what was it about the classes at stonehill that swayed your decision?

^^^^^
I'm interested in that question, too, as I'm seriously considering Stonehill. But, does anyone have access to LAST years rankings in US News??? Stonehill and St. Michael's are ranked the same this year, but each was in a different category last year. I know Stonehill was #1 in Comprehensive Colleges in the Northeast, but I have no idea what St. Mike's was ranked. Anybody???

i believe it was ranked #11 Best Universities Master's in the North for the 2007 US news Americas Best Colleges

skiier1~ Thank you sooooo much! I couldn't find that info anywhere. That helps alot. Thanks!

I am glad I came across this thread as I attended both colleges. I attended Stonehill one year in 1985/86 and hated it. It had zero social life and was a complete suitcase college. I wanted to be anywhere but there and transferred to St. Michaels in 1986.

They are very different schools and I would say about equal in terms of academics, but St. Mikes is a much richer school and a closer alumnae that really stick together.

Stonehill is a suitcase college. Every friday, the students all leave and go home or venture to other schools with weekend life. St Mikes has everyone there all the time as most students are from out of state.

Stonehill has terrible dorms and the junior and senior housing are just like the dorms. St Mikes has real townhomes on campus and tons of off campus houses right across from campus with very wild parties.

When I attended St Mikes the drinking age was still 18 in Vermont and the place was a party school full of very rich kids, with very few people focused on academics. I still got a decent education and work now as a technical writer and editor.

In the years since I have attended college, Stonehill has received better rankings then St. Mikes and surpassed St. Mikes in terms of selectivity. Still, you'll have better connections in life if you attend St. Mikes and have a much better time. Burlington/Winooski VT is the quintessential college area with UVM, Norwich, and Middlebury all close by.

Burlington is a college town. Easton is not. It is 40 minutes to Boston and Boston is not really a college town -- it is a major city with lots of colleges -- there is a big difference.

Stonehill is in an uneventful suburb --Easton and close to dumpy Brockton.

I would visit both and Saint Anselm (another very good school) and make a decision.

Is your opinion of Stonehill based on what it was like in 1985/86? If so, it sounds like it has definitely changed since then. I go there now, and it is definitely not a suitcase school. The majority of students stay on campus on the weekends and enjoy the dorms that are actually very nice. I'd say both are similar, like you said Stonehill probably has stronger academics and is more selective, but you can't compare the two schools as they were in the the 1980s.

Here's the link to the St. Michael's press release discussing their ranking in the new USNW college report:

Saint Michael's College

To summarize:

"The switch in categories changed Saint Michael's positioning. The college landed this year at 104th in the Best Liberal Arts Colleges ranking nationally, in a tie with Albion, Bennington, Hampshire, Presbyterian, St. Mary's (IN), and Washington & Jefferson Colleges. Saint Michael's position was bolstered by an excellent rate of retention, percentage of full-time faculty, SAT scores, and percentage of classes with fewer than 20 students. Last year the college was ranked 106th. Saint Michael's ranked in the top 15 of the Northern Regional Masters Universities category for 17 years."

Never having visited the school, my D now proclaims this her #1 choice. She's logging more time on their website than on facebook! So I'm trying to learn everything I can about it. Unfortunately for her, we live much too far away for a campus visit unless and until she is accepted.

Merit money is a bit consideration for us. Anyone have a first-hand perspective on that aspect?

Thanks!

I am glad to hear Stonehill now has campus life on the weekends. It is a beautiful campus and really has come into its own academically. I wish you well.

They are both great colleges and the latest US News had St Mikes a few notches above Stonehill, but next year it could be different.

Any college and education is what you put into it. Get all you can out of the classes and soak up as much knowledge as possible and you will do well.
