Hey CC late-borns! I was planning to apply to some summer programs this upcoming year, however, I noticed that many of them require you to be 16 by the time of the program. I was supposed to be born in early February, but instead I got stuck in mid-December. 7 weeks premature. By this summer, I'll still be 15, but many of my peers will be eligible for these programs because they were born earlier in the year.

Do any of you have similar problems?
Should I lie about my age to apply to these programs?

I had the same problem. Last year, I wanted to apply to an NIH internship, but I am born in late November, so I was not 16 in time. Definitely do not lie, as it is not worth the risk!

I got myself an internship over the summer at a local university, just by emailing a professor. That’s pretty easy to do regardless of your age (although you may need a parent willing to drive you there!) There are also probably some programs that don’t have an age requirement, but others will have to help out there.

If you want to hear a REALLY sad one, I’m a big fan of figure skating, and there’s a brilliant Russian girl named Adelina Sotnikova who’s born on July 1, 1996* and was ineligible to compete as a junior internationally last year-because the International Skating Union requires that junior competitors be 13 before July 1st of the season. So the reigning SENIOR Nat’l Champ missed out by one day. Russia filed a petition, to no avail.

I’m born in the fall, so I share your pain.

*I’ve also heard that she’s born on July 11, but the general consensus seems to be July 1. This is what her ISU profile says, so I’ll stick with it.

Can’t think of a specific one right now, however I won’t be 18 until college so that rules out a lot of opportunities for the summer before college.

I thought this would be about being the last born!

I hate that! Both of my school’s community service trips this summer [one is Habitat for Humanity in Maine, the other’s in South Africa] require you to be 16, and they both leave RIGHT before my birthday!
