It's time for course selections at my school and I'm in a bit of a dilemma: choosing between Latin and Art for my elective.
Art is something I enjoy doing, and I have won some contests (nationwide and state) for my work. I'm taking Art right now, and if I do it for all four years, I could take AP Studio Art senior year.
On the other hand, I LOVE learning new languages and Latin could be helpful in learning others (though presently I'm ambivalent towards taking Latin for a number of reasons). Another downside is that since it's primarily a freshmen course, every year that I take it I'll be with kids a year younger then me. I should probably also mention that junior year I might be studying abroad (France), so the possibility of me continuing it junior year (but not senior) is slim.
So, which one do you think I should take?

hmm...both seem like really good choices! It really depends on your school. Is the art program great? Or will it be detrimental (ie, my middle school had a horrible program, discouraged creativity, etc, while my new school has a great program) to your personal art? Is your latin teacher known as good or bad? Can you take on another academic class? Which would you enjoy more?

I love languages :D I think it's an absolute best when you learn something new about a culture just by the language origin.

I'm in AP Spanish right now...and last year I had the same dilemma...of did I want to take Latin 1-2 AND Spanish or Foods AND Spanish...

I ended up taking Latin 1-2. Selfishly I took it because I wanted my colleges to think I was academically capable to take TWO languages instead of slacking off with "foods" yep, I took it because Latin sounded better on a transcript. And yeah, I was worried about what the underclassmen thing...but then again, why should I worry? I'm their superior, hahah.

But what I have gained from taking Latin besides regret of not taking it earlier: it's fun (I have a great teacher), it's hard (compared to Spanish 1-2 my eighth grade year, but I'm doing well in Latin right now because of the 5 year Spanish background), you'll learn more English grammar in Latin than any English class (at least that's my experience at my school hahah), and freshmen aren't that bad....remember, we use to be like them...and more likely than not, you'll be doing better in the class than them, hahah. So be prepared to help them!

Love Languages=give Latin a chance. you'll be amazed at all the derivatives :D

Good luck on your decision!!!

Art is fun too...I guess....except the fact that I have haunting memories of my mean 4th art teacher yelling at me in front of the class.

It sounds like you are favoring Art, so I'd go with that. It doesn't hurt that you seem to be heavily involved in art as well.

Do you take another language already?

TAKE ART, go with what u love. i am in latin II at my school, latin is a tad bit over rated. u can take latin in college. no one likes bein stuck w/ kids younger than them. if u r winning awards-take art, its a wonderful passion.
