I go to a large high school, and our GPA's are weighted. I'm trying to figure out what classes to take next year. I have room for one elective after my required classes and Art II. (I'll be a sophmore.)

IBMYP Physics I 5
IBMYP Chem I 5
IBMYP English II 5
IB Math Methods I 6
IBMYP Civics and Economics 5
IBMYP Art II 4

I can't decide whether to take Latin I or AP Lit. I'm interested in Literature but don't know if it would be redundant since I'm already taking English. I'd love to study Latin at some point, but I may only be able to follow through with the Latin sequence this year and next year because of IB TOK senior year. I don't think I'd ever make it to an AP Latin course. Opinions?

You won't make AP Latin so if that's a big issue, stick with LIt.

I don't know, taking 2 English classes does seem a bit redundant. Latin is awesome :) And you should take it if you think you're interested in it.

I had to make basically the same decision this year. I went with the English. Wasn't already planning on an AP English though...

I say go with Latin. It gives you such a good foundation for vocabulary, grammar, law, sciences, other languages...it is such a good foundation. Plus it is a ton of fun!

I just don't know if the Latin will be fairly dumbed down since it's a regular class. At my school, there's regular, honors, AP/IB, and the regular classes, I've heard, can be aggravatingly pointless for IB kids.

AP Psych's also an option, how about that? I suppose it's considered "lite," though.

Latin I usually does tend to be pretty easy (and in my experience, goofy). It's usually a really fun language, though, and it's really helpful with the English because of all the grammatical differences. You learn lots of allusions, too.

Out of curiosity, is there a way you could take AP Lit rather than English II? At my school, it substitutes for senior year English. If you can exchange it for a regular English class further down the line, I'd definitely go with Latin. But maybe I'm biased; Latin's always been one of my favorite classes.

I'm taking AP Psych as well, and it's fun and lightly challenging, but it's definitely not the hardest AP class I've been.
