Latke-Hamantash Debate

Chicago Latke-Hamantash Debate - YouTube

For those that are unfamiliar with this UChicacago tradition, enjoy.

[AEPi Live](http://aepi.uchicago.edu/live)

this is the last one which was put on by AEPi

Just the sort of pretentious, faux-intellectual “tradition” that sends me running from the building. It’s not provocative. It’s not witty. It’s just stupid.

If UChicago-types think of this as the sort of thing that merits its own annual rite, I’m glad to know about it now…before my parents shell out that $75 application fee.

I haven’t watched this one, but the talks I have seen or read are pretty funny. You don’t have to love that kind of humor, but if it really sends you running from the building, then it’s probably a good idea for you not to apply. There are lots and lots of schools that cater to people with your tastes; Chicago just isn’t one of them.

This debate is not unique to UChicago. It’s done everywhere now. Unless you think 30+ colleges including Harvard and Princeton are pretentious too…

But that leaves you with so few top colleges to choose from…

Don’t see a “Latke-Hamentash debate” thread over on the Harvard or Princeton boards. If Harvard does host such a knee-slapper, it doesn’t appear to be as central to its identity–ie, Harvard doesn’t invoke the Latke-Hanentasch debate in its admissions materials (as does UChicago).

I don’t object to satirical debates over the relative merits of ethnic snack foods, per se. I just cringe when the “humor” is so self-conscious. After watching these vids, I wonder whether UChicago has a high percentage of mediocre minds amongst its faculty. Its LHD propaganda leaves me with a feeling that the place is overrated.

New member ■■■■■? Or old member-with-a-UChicago-axe-to-grind with yet another new user name?

Someone who thinks Latke-Hamantash is dumb must be a ■■■■■? The cow is that sacred?

From where I sit, LHD is held up by UChicago-types as a kind of totem. Of what, I’m not exactly sure. Maybe “who-knows-what-those-wacky-geniuses-will-do-next.” Whatever it is, the exertion makes me wince, that’s all.

I’d bet on ■■■■■, too. Not because of the opinion expressed on the LH debate, but because none of the posts come across as something a high school junior write.

Lousy: All schools have traditions which appear (to some) to be dumb. Surely you know that.

motherbear332, thanks for the compliment!!! (I really mean that!)

More power to you UChicago!

Agreed Mutti2012 and motherbear332 - user is a week old and been trolling on other threads too…perhaps it’s time to post directions back to the bridge.
