The labels I used last year are still sticking faithfully to son's dress shirts and pants, but are peeling off clothes with any kind of stretch--yeah, I know I should sew them on, but I keep hoping there's something better out there.

This is the only way to go for knits-

Gotta love a site that shows labels ironed onto socks on the home page–thanks Liddy! :)

There are laundry stamps with indelible ink you can order.

The dark clothes, you stamp a label and stitch on the article of clothing.

Thanks to all for the question and the solutions! Great info! I just ordered everything I will need and certainly wouldn’t have thought about it with enough time to not have the solution be my sloppy handwriting and a sharpie!

And let me take this opportunity to beg all parents out there to please label your kid’s clothes SOMEHOW, especially if you have sons. Initials with a sharpie are much better than nothing. You would not believe the number of items of clothing that I find around the dorm in the course of the year, lost somewhere in the hallway, abandoned in the laundry room, forgotten in the common room… and because boys can’t recognize their own clothes, tracking down the owner is often next to impossible if clothes aren’t labeled. Shoes and socks are the items most often lost, so please don’t forget to label those…

These labels stay stuck.

Just to back up PEA teacher: I labelled everything last year, from underwear to pants, except–for some reason–his leather “dress” shoes…guess what we were buying over Christmas break?

Anyway, those were labelled before I sent them back. Label stuff like calculators, waterbottles, and laptops too–all were left in class or dorm rooms this year.

Where is the best way to put the labels? Also, I think my son would feel embarrassed at the college campus laundry center if I labeled his clothes. Do you guys not agree?

@rosen: Please read post #6 above! It’s totally true. Virtually everyone labels clothing (as well as other possessions).

John,

Are you aware that this is a prep school board, not college? Not sure that I’d label my kid’s clothes if he was going off to college

Is it really THAT important to label clothes? I’m not buying the laundry service so I’ll be washing all my own stuff. I’m not the type of kid to leave clothes lying around on the dorm room floor and I picked out all of my clothes + shoes so I can definitely recognize them even if they were lost. Any opinions???

I’m not going to label my clothes, I don’t leave my clothes lying around (except for in my room ) and I don’t think that anyone is going to go inside and take anything. And I’ll be washing my own clothes i don’t really see why you should label your clothes. Things like a calculator, I most definitely will 'cause no one wants to buy a replacement graphing calculator.

I think labeling is probably more important if you’re using a laundry service and if you’re a guy whose clothes look a lot like other guys’ clothes.

If you’re a kid who doesn’t lose clothes, you don’t need to label them. If you’re a boy, on the other hand, you do need to label them :)

We have found this system especially useful, although not for clothing:

Hi,

I came across this post and thought I would give my advise. I label all of my child’s clothes and so far he has come home with just about everything:-) I can recommend labelname.co.uk, I order the iron on labels as I am far too busy to sew and so far so good!
