Yes, you need to rent a PO Box.

You do not need to use laundry services through the university. There are plenty of machines in each dorm and there is a dry cleaner's nearby the school.

the laundry service is okay if you hate doing laundry or find yourself exceptionally busy. they'll ruin a few things but at least they'll be folded.

don't rent the refrigerator and microwave. get them at walmart about 4 miles away.

don't buy the bed sheets. go to a factory outlet store and get some better quality.

Seems like there's a post like this every year

This is last year's, everything said in it still stands:

Hi everyone.

My D will be a freshman this fall. I have a few questions I hope someone can answer.
The 2008 student handbook says that, beginning this year, each room will be furnished with a rentable MicroFridge. If not wanted, it will be removed. It also says that this is the only cooking appliance allowed.
a. Is a small coffee maker considered a "cooking appliance?"
b. Would you still recommend having the unit removed and replacing it with a small refrigerator from Wal-Mart?
We were thinking that a P.O. Box would not be necessary. The university will accept packages that we send, and D does not get much snail mail other than "junk mail." Most of her communications are through the internet. Is there something I'm forgetting or not thinking of?

Thanks!!!!!

You do need a PO Box. You do NOT need a Microfridge, the cube refrigerator from Wal-Mart is fine. A coffee maker is allowed. Freshmen are required to get the full meal plan so they really don't need to be cooking in their dorms.

Wonder what the microfridge people paid W&L to have the default be having one instead of not having one.....it's the second biggest ripoff around (after the linens thing) and it makes me mad that the school helps them rip students and their parents off. I had a microfridge my freshman year (only because my roommate got one anyway) and then bought a bigger fridge my sophomore year from Sears that cost only a little more than my half of one-year's rent for the microfridge.

avoid the laundry service if you can.
they did far more damage than the bill they sent for extra poundage.

but did you ever hear of a laundromat taking responsibility? i haven't and hell will freeze over before I probably will.

D paid for her the laundry service herself last year, I did not think it was worth the money. They lost a bundle of her clothes, sent her someone else's clothes. However...they did reimburse her for everything that she lost.

my favorite response that i heard--brand new Polo dress shirt is returned with a big gaping hole at the bicep area.
wasn't there before.
excuse: cloth has dry rot.

hahahahahahaaha

FWIW, other schools have the microfridge as the only allowed cooking appliance.
