I was working this in my head. If you have a law degree would that get you any sort of advantage when you run your business or is it rather better to have an MBA?

I certainly wouldn't waste all of the time and money getting a law degree if all I wanted to do was start my own business.

That being said, one can be successful in many different lines of work. You need to discover what you enjoy (and it doesn't seem like many people enjoy law..perhaps you would though).

Would it be good though to have a law degree along with an MBA? I mean would it help you out at all if you do have a law degree because if you get into a law suit...it would give you an advantage? Possibly it can ward off potential lawsuits lol?

Personally, I think the dual MBA/Law degree is a waste of time/money. If you had a full ride scholarship maybe, but otherwise I don't see much benefit to it. If you get sued, you can always hire a lawyer. If you need to file your taxes, you can hire an accountant. If you need your lawn mowed, you can hire an illegal. You don't need to be an expert in everything.

a lawyer who represents himself has a fool as a client. don't get a JD if all you want to do with that $150k education is better understand contracts or negotiations.

if you want to start your own business, join the MIT Enterprise Forum and go to meetings and events and see what real entrepreneurs do. maybe join a board and give some advice or ask some questions of existing ventures, meet people who would be great mentors, etc. then decide what career path is right for you and if an MBA makes sense. that's my advice, anyway.
