Law school and politics

I am really interested in a career in politics, and I am also interested in going to law school. I know you don't need a law degree to get into politics, but how can it help? I know the majority of politicians are lawyers. What things can you do in politics with a J.D.?

The top three Presidential candidates from each party include five lawyers out of the six of them: one UNC, two Harvard, one Yale, and one NYU. McCain (a soldier) is the lone exception.

If Fred Thompson (Vanderbilt) officially enters the race, he would bring the total to six of seven.

So basically, If I want to be a Congressman, I should have a law degree. I don't want to be a Congressman, I am more interested in lobbying and political consulting, things like that. I am aware a lot of lobbyists are lawyers.

With a law degree it's suitable for such career but I know some local politicians who have degrees in economics, public administration and even business.
