I'm sorry if I sound a bit ignorant, but how many years is Law School approximately? And how much in terms of costs, and how selective is the admissions process for schools like Harvard, NYU, Stanford, Columbia, etc?

Also, what are good majors for law other than pre-law? I know Poly-sci is a popular route, and Philosophy is a very esteemed route. What about International Relations? Econ?

Law school is 3 years. If you go to LS at night part-time, it's 4.

The cost varies enormously. The estimated cost of attendance at Harvard Law is currently about $55,000 a year.

Admissions is competitive. However, it tends to be based primarily on gpa and LSAT score. It's less about ECs or geographic diversity than UG.

You can major in almost anything--certainly almost anything is better than a major in "pre-law." Study whatever you enjoy and can do well in. Any of the majors you mention in your message is fine.

political science
philosophy
international relations
english
history
communications
economics
business
classics
psychology
sociology
"cultural" studies

this is just a sample. but you can major in anything really. patent lawyers will most likely have majored in some science major. entertainment lawyers may have majored in something related to their field.

About law school costs: Jonri said that HLS is currently $55k/year. That includes tuition, room, board, books, health insurance, etc - i.e "all-included." Tuition is about $35k/year there...?

Here are some other numbers:
UVA/W&M: $40k/year total for out-of-state
UConn: $13k/year in tuition for in-state, $17k/year for New Englanders who are not from Maine (reciprocity), and $23k/year for out-of-state.
Brooklyn: $48k/year for everything
Columbia: $56k/year for everything
Northwestern: $55k/year for everything
