Law school or medical school?

I’m a rising junior in high school and am already looking up colleges. I know that I want to become a lawyer or an obstetrician but I’m not sure which to choose. Both are very expensive and every time I research them, there are always people saying how much law school or medical school isn’t worth it. I know it’s early for me to be deciding on a profession and I might change my mind, but it would help my college search and it would help me get prepared for whatever I choose. Any thoughts?

If you’re pre-professional, your basic goal is during college is to rack up an excellent GPA at a well-regarded school. Major doesn’t matter much. Law schools will be happy to see applicants with a science background. Both law and med schools look favorably on people who can communicate (talk and write) well. Use your ECs, internships and summer employment during the college years to explore both fields and make a decision about which field you’re better suited to. Along the way, get to know some of your faculty. You’ll need letters of recommendation.

Besides, without knowing you, we can’t really tell you which career would be best for you.

Are you good at science classes? Are you good with logic and forensic activities? Do you want to provide hands-on medical care, or argue cases in a courtroom? Are you a person who wants to be up and moving and interacting with patients, or are you comfortable sitting behind a desk for much of your day?

As exacademic points out, you can keep your options open by taking a major in college that interests you, but provides plenty of opportunity to get the prerequisite courses for medical school acceptance. You can get into law school with a course load heavy in science classes, but you can’t get into med school without having taken specific courses.

I would suggest looking at the BLS to see which job suits you better. You can look at factors such as the amount of jobs available and work environment.

Hope this helps!

Most lawyers spend little or no time in a courtroom. Probably the best way to see what lawyers do is to get a secretarial or paralegal or tech job at a firm. Lots of writing, editing, typing, proofreading, photocopying, and collating of documents gets done on off hours and PT gigs may be available. Summer temp work might be another possibility. School (even law school) doesn’t give you a sense of what law work is like.
