I hadn't heard of Lawrence before seeing it in Reed's list of colleges that produce the highest percentage of PhDs in Physics. Amazingly, it's right up there in the top 10 alongside Carleton, Harvard, MIT and Harvey Mudd. Can anyone explain that? I'm looking for a LAC with a strong physics program and wondering whether Lawrence should be on my list? I'm a junior from Texas and will probably not be able to visit, but I'm definitely applying to at least two other schools in the midwest (Carleton, Grinnell) and I would certainly consider a school in WI.

I visited Lawrence a few months back and I was looking at the 3-2 engineering program so I got some info on the physics department and I was told they have lots of labs and that the physics profs are really good. They also hold physics weekend for prospective students, so that leads me to believe the program must be pretty good…

My soph daughter just came back from a spring break trip to NYC with about 28 other Laurentians to do work for Habitat for Humanity in an impoverished area of greater NYC. As she showed me some of her pictures, I recall her referring to more than a few physics majors. She told me she thought LU had a decent program for physics. She went to LU for the English and the music , and we focused on this part of LU in the discovery process, so it was interesting to hear this.

There were also more than a few international students in that bunch of students. One was from Afghanstan, I recall. They all got to see parts of America that are not in the tourist books (and they were very well received and appreciated in those areas, I was told - but they also did see and experience the best of downtown Manhattan in that trip - a great educational opportunity for them all.

I thought that this trip also revealed a bit about these LU students, taking a bus trip , going cross country and helping others during their precious spring break time.

I’m interviewing tonight with an admissions officer. This is my first college interview. I’m a little nervous…

Ok, so that went really, really well. Nice adcom, great interview. Love this school!
